Tradition:
Sixteen punts
highlight ’83
Toilet Bowl’
■ Continued from Page 2B
Many fans can argue that the
two teams played down, instead
of up, to their respective poten
tials. The Ducks and the Beavers
came into the season-ending game
with a combined record of 5-14.
The game featured a combined
16 punts, 11 turnovers, four
missed field goals and no points
— not to mention more blown
scoring opportunities than fans in
the stands.
“Every time we would have
good field position, we’d fumble,”
said Rich Brooks, the Ducks’ head
coach at the time.
Brooks also called the game
“strange” — which the total of
fense numbers prove. The Beavers
dominated the first half by hold
ing the Ducks to 45 yards in total
offense while gaining 156 yards
themselves. But the second half
told another story entirely: The
Ducks owned that stanza with 300
yards to the Beavers’ 82.
Strangely enough, Oregon State
had a head coach that, coming into
the Civil War game, was in very
much the same situation as Ore
gon State head coach Jerry Petti
bone is in now.
Then-coach Joe Avezzano’s job
was reportedly on the line enter
ing the game, as has been reported
of Pettibone’s position this week.
Avezzano also came into the game
with a winning percentage similar
to Pettibone’s — he had compiled
a record of 4-38-2, while Pettibone
has managed to amass a record of
13-51-1.
The 100th Civil War game will
be played on Saturday, and while
not every match-up has been the
most beautiful thing for fans to
watch, they have been memo
rable.
