Ducks’ Bowl hopes still alive

plays for the right to go to the
Aloha Bowl this Saturday

Just three weeks ago when the
Oregon football team had a 3-5
record and no wins in the Pacific
10 Conference, who would have
thought that Saturday’s Civil War
game would hold Bowl game im
plications for the Ducks?
But as strange as it might seem,
that is the case as Oregon heads to
Corvallis to take on Oregon State
in the 100th game of this in-state
rivalry. A Duck victory would
give them a 6-5 record, and possi
bly make them the fourth and
only remaining team eligible in
the Pac-10 for the postseason.
This would earn them an auto
matic Aloha Bowl berth.
Granted, many things need to
happen in order for the Ducks to
gain a Bowl bid. None of which
are too far fetched, though. In fact,
as odds makers have it, Oregon is
the Pac-10 favorite to be in Hon
olulu on Christmas Day.
Here’s the low-down on what
needs to happen Saturday for
Oregon to be guaranteed a Bowl
game. Arizona State needs to beat'
Arizona, Washington needs to
beat Washington State, UCLA
needs to beat USC, California
needs to beat Stanford, and of
course, Oregon needs to beat Ore
gon State.
But this is just the best case sce
nario for the Ducks to land in the
Aloha Bowl, not the only one. For
instance, Oregon needs USC to
lose just one game out of its next
two, whether that be to UCLA Sat
urday or Notre Dame next week
end.
If Stanford beats California, it
will be the Cardinal heading for
the Sun Bowl, while the Ducks
and the Bears fight it out for the
Aloha Bowl tied for fourth place
in the Pac-10 with 6-5 records.
The deciding factor would de
pend on a couple of things, said
Marcia Klompus, executive direc
tor of the Aloha Bowl Executive.
“Fan base means a great deal to
us,” she said. “We would also
take a look at how the teams
played on Saturday and in some
previous games.”
This couldn’t be better for the
Ducks. Assuming a win on Satur
day, Oregon will have won three
straight games, including a rout of
California last weekend.
“You guys look to have the best
chance to win your rivalry,”
Klompus said. "We’re all thinking
green and yellow down here.”
Probably the oddest thing about
this weekend’s Pac-10 games is
that Oregon, a team that started
the conference season losing five
games in a row, is probably going
to get a Bowl berth by finishing
fourth in the Pac-10 with a 3-5
conference record.
“It’s been a very unusual year,”
Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon
said. “By week 10 you usually
have an established upper and
lower portion of the conference
standings. This year it seems
strange that everyone, except Ari
zona State and Washington, is
muddled in the middle.”
When asked about what he
thought about Oregon still in a
Bowl game race, Muldoon an
swered, “When they were 2-5, I
would have said it was too much
of a long shot. But now, anything
is possible.”
But what is definite is that the
Aloha Bowl will be getting a Pac
10 team that will be no better than
one game above .500, something
that can’t be too appealing to
game sponsors or organizers.
“It has been a long time since
we haven’t had a ranked-team in
our Bowl,” Klompus said. “But I
don’t think that is indicative of
the team; it’s just parity.”
Is it parity or is the Pac-10 just a
poor conference?
“You can say it’s a weak confer
ence,” Muldoon said, “or you can
say it’s competitive. I’ll choose
the latter.”
Good conference, bad confer
ence. Parity or competitiveness.
Neither really matters. What mat- .
ters is that if the Ducks win Satur
day, they will have put them
selves in position to go to a Bowl
game for the third-straight year —
something that seemed impossi
ble just a few weeks ago. But first
they must take care of Oregon
State.
“That would be icing on the
cake,” tight end Josh Wilcox said
of getting a Bowl berth with a win
against Oregon State. “But we just
want to win the game, and we can
worry about all that when it hap
pens because it doesn’t really lie
in our hands.”
