Java and the Muse gives a
night to women performers
■ EVENT: The show allows
women a chance to be on
stage without being judged

What started as some reflec
tions over a cup of coffee for a
University alumna has turned
into a traditional event for the
ASUO Women’s Center.
Java and the Muse will take
place again tonight in the EMU In
ternational Student Lounge at 7
p.m.
The quarterly event was devel
oped by Jenny Root, a former stu
dent, about five years ago, said
Bonnie Kanter, office coordinator
of the Women’s Center.
“The word ‘muse’ means an in
spiring artistic force,” she said.
“Jenny wanted to do something
for women to express their talent
in a safe place. So one day she
was having coffee and snacks,
and there it was. Unfortunately,
not many people know what ‘Java
and the Muse’ means.”
For those who still don’t know,
Java and the Muse is an evening
of different performances from lo
cal singers, poets and dancers —
all of whom are women.
“This is to showcase women’s
talent,” said Edith Webster,
Women’s Center fund-raising co
ordinator. “The talent levels vary.
It’s not like we’re expecting a lot
of rock stars. It’s women coming
together and expressing them
selves. It’s powerful and a lot of
positive energy.”
Java and the Muse also serves to
raise money for the Women’s
Center general fund. Attendees
are requested to make a $3 dona
tion.
“It’s important women know
they have a place where they can
come and not be judged if they
don’t perform well,” Kanter said.
“It’s a good atmosphere. It can be
very therapeutic as well.”
Performances kick off at 7 p.m.
and end around 10:30 p.m. An
open microphone will be avail
able for an hour after perfor
mances.

■ A non-student who lives at
1728 Ferry Street reported he had

Drug Store contacted him and told
him someone was cashing his
checks. Police do not know how
much money was taken from the ac
count and have not identified a sus
pect.
■ Stereo equipment worth $315
was taken from a car parked at 492
E. 13th Ave. sometime between
midnight and 8 a.m. on Nov. 16.
■ A bicycle valued at $700 was

The ASUO Student Senate con
vened Wednesday night in the
EMU Boardroom.
■ After some debate, ASUO
Legal Services received $825 from
the Senate surplus fund. The
money will go toward funding
work-study positions for law
clerk research assistants.
Funding for the positions was
originally denied during last
year’s ASUO Programs Finance
Committee budget hearings.
“I have a hard time going above
the PFC,” Senator Doug Baker
said. “If it’s something [the PFC]
didn’t see as a need for the budget
and we give them this special re
quest, it’s like we’re going above
their heads.”
However, Senate President
Kalpana Krishnamurthy dis
agreed, stating the work-study po
sitions provided valuable services
to University students.
“While 1 totally trust the PFC,
when a program is doing a great
job and training people, it’s not in
the students’ best interests to limit
these opportunities,” she said.
■ The Senate confirmed Chris
Jaeger and Sean Parlaman to Ath
letic Department Finance seats 8
and 9, respectively. All but one
Senate position have been filled.
