Oregon quarterback Tony Graziani may be well enough to play this week against California after re-injuring
his knee last weekend against Arizona.
Preview: Bowl hopes will be on the line
■ Continued from Page 1B
him. Wide receivers Bobby Shaw
and Na’il Benjamin, along with
tight end Tony Gonzales, have
teamed up to accumulate 1,969
yards of Barnes’ total passing out
put.
California’s punter, Ryan Long
well, may also factor into this
weekend’s match-up, Bellotti
said. Longwell is seventh in the
nation in yards-per-punt and has
the same stats as Oregon place
kicker Joshua Smith in field goals
per game. Bellotti is more wor
ried about Longwell’s punting
ability than his effectiveness as a
scorer.
“Ryan Longwell is the number
one punter in the league, so field
position and special teams are
going to be a big factor,” Bellotti
said.
Defensively California doesn’t
have a whole lot to brag about as
it sits in the cellar of the Pac-10
in yards allowed per game. But
defensive back Kato Serwanga is
second in the conference and
leads the secondary with four in
terceptions on the year and de
fensive tackle Brandon Whiting
could create trouble for Oregon
up front.
“Brandon Whiting is a con
cern,” Bellotti said. “He has a
tendency to destroy the pocket
for you in terms of your pass pro
tection. He’s a guy that we have
to be aware of on every play.”
Both the Ducks and the Golden
Bears are very similar on paper
— potent offenses with the abili
ty to score at will and permeable
defenses that have been strug
gling to keep opponents out of
the end zone. California is aver
aging 465.7 yards per game this
season while the Oregon defense
has given up an average of 460.6
yards per game. There is also a
very similar comparison when
looking at the match-up from the
other angle. Oregon is putting up
441.1 yards per game while Cali
fornia is allowing 463.1 yards per
game. These are ingredients for a
high scoring affair.
Two of the Ducks’ main
weapons who were injured last
week against Arizona, quarter
back Tony Graziani and tailback
Saladin McCullough, are hopeful
against California this weekend,
Bellotti said. Graziani re-injured
his medial collateral ligament in
his knee but had full range of mo
tion and was expected to practice
on Wednesday.
McCullough’s prognosis on his
hamstring injury was also en
couraging to the Ducks’ coaching
staff because it turned out to be
not as severe as was thought after
the game. He also had a full
range of motion and could walk
without pain, Bellotti said,
adding McCullough could be
ready to go this weekend even if
he didn’t practice all week. Mc
Cullough ended Oregon’s rushing
drought with more than 200
yards in three quarters of work
last week — the best rushing per
formance by a Duck in four years.
Michael Fletcher and Dameron
Ricketts are also expected to be
back after long absences because
of injuries. Fletcher went down
in the game against Arizona State
almost seven weeks ago and was
initially thought to be out for the
season. Linebacker Reggie Jordan
is also expected to return this
week after missing last week’s
game with an ankle injury.
Oregon will need all of its
players healthy this week against
California to keep any distant
chances at a bowl bid alive.
