Football: Graziani cites mental mistakes

took itself out of the game with
its inability to capitalize on its
scoring chances.
“We drove the ball two or
three times down close, but
didn’t score,” Oregon head coach
Mike Bellotti said. “We aren’t a
good enough team to do that and
still win.”
The turning point in the game
came on a 37-yard field goal at
tempt by Oregon near the end of
the first quarter. Center Seaton
Daly snapped the ball early, skid
ding it past holder Ryan Perry
Smith and into Oregon territory
where it was recovered by Wash
ington. Two plays later, Dillon
punched it into the end zone for
his second touchdown and a 14
0 Husky lead.
“I think our mistakes took us
out of the game,” Bellotti said.
“The bungled field goal attempt
was at least a 10-point swing.”
Oregon was down 21-7 to start
the second half and only able to
gain 47 yards of total offense in
the entire third quarter. Washing
ton, in the same quarter, scored
13 unanswered points, includ
ing a safety, to take a 33-7 lead
going into the fourth quarter.
Oregon would score a touch
down with four minutes left in
the game on a 35-yard pass from
Tony Graziani to Tony Hartley
for the final score of the game.
The reason for Oregon’s offen
sive ineffectiveness was summed
up by Graziani.
“Mental mistakes,” he said.
“We have to quit making them,
and once we do that, we are go
ing to score some points.”
“We could have stepped up
and made some bigger plays,”
tightend Josh Wilcox said. “It’s a
hard loss to take. We didn’t exe
cute good enough and got our
selves into a hole.”
After the game, the players
were left to wonder how to turn
around a season that went sour
so fast.
“It’s frustrating because we
know that we can play better
than this, and we know we can
win,” Schmidt said. “We have
got to play with more pride and
enthusiasm. It feels like every
thing is just crashing down on
us.”
Oregon will have two weeks to
attempt to get it back on track be
fore taking on Arizona during
Homecoming weekend Nov. 9.
