Airplane plunges into
field near Corvallis
1 HALSEY—A small helicopter
crashed Saturday morning in a
grass seed field just south of town,
killing the pilot.
The two-seat Robinson R22
had been rented from Avia Flight
Services Inc., a helicopter charter
and instruction service in Corval
lis, Linn County Sheriff Dave
Burright said.
The pilot was identified as
Bernardo Rezende Da Cunha, 21,
of Brazil. He was a student at
Avia and was making a solo
flight. He left the Corvallis airfield
at about 8:30 a.m.
No one saw the crash, Burright
said.
“A resident in the area heard
the helicopter in the air and then
heard the crash and saw smoke
from where the chopper had gone
down,” Burright said.
The sheriffs office believes
Cunha died on impact.
Six prisoners break
out from private jail
2 FLORENCE, Ariz. — Six pris
oners, including three con
victed murderers, broke out of a
private prison Saturday night, au
thorities said.
The six were in an outdoor
recreation area with other prison
ers around 7:40 p.m. when they
cut through three fences sur
rounding the Central Arizona De
tention Center and fled into the
desert.
Two of the inmates — one a
convicted murderer, the other a
convicted burglar — were appre
hended at a Florence convenience
store around 11 p.m., Hart said.
State and local police used heli
copters and dogs to search for the
fugitives, who were wearing
prison-issue gray pants and shirts.
All of the escaped inmates were
originally from Alaska, Hart said.
The escapees not convicted of
murder were jailed for serious of
fenses, Hart said.
Ruling Japanese party
solidly wins elections
3 TOKYO — The prime minis
ter’s party, vowing to overhaul
the bureaucracy that dominates
Japanese policymaking, won a
parliamentary election Sunday.
The results of Sunday’s election
mean all but certain reelection for
current prime minister Ryutaro
Hashimoto and a return to glory
for the Liberal Democratic Party,
which governed Japan alone from
1955 to 1993 before falling amid a
series of corruption scandals.
The Liberal Democrats won 239
of the 500 seats in Parliament’s
lower house, which chooses the
prime minister.
The main opposition New
Frontier Party took 156 seats,
while the Democratic Party won
52. The Communist Party took 26
seats, up from 15.
The new parliament is expect
ed to convene at the end of this
month or in early November to se
lect the prime minister.
