Incident: Suspect allegedly made demands, threatened to kill child ■ Continued from Page 1A “The suspect was shooting at motorists, not officers,” Hastings said. “We don’t know exactly why, but he may have been trying to cause a diversion, like an accident, to give him more time to get away.” Three people were injured during the shootings along the interstate, and an un known number of cars were damaged, Hast ings said. Debra Lynn Williamson, 20, of Creswell, was taken to Roseburg Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck, while Phoebe Joan Whitter, 7 months, and Norval J. Richey, 64, were treated at Sacred Heart Hospital for shattered glass injuries, Hast ings said. Whitter and Richey, who were in separate vehicles, were treated for superficial injuries and released later that day, said Chris Brown, Sacred Heart Hospital spokesman. “Shots were being fired at motorists from the Beltline intersection to Rice Hill, around mile marker 145, just outside Cottage Grove,” said Sgt. Gary Miller, Springfield po lice officer. “After that point we aren’t sure how many shots the suspect fired.” Driving at speeds of more than 80 mph, the suspect continued south on 1-5, Hastings said. To stop the suspect, police officers set up a spike strip at mile marker 146 north of Oakland. After the suspect ran the car over the spike strip, he drove for 5 more miles before his car went into the median and flipped over, Hast ings said. “Officers could see the suspect and the child and they both appeared to be OK,” he said. “But officers could see the suspect was holding the child with one arm and was holding a gun to the child’s head.” Tactical officers from the Douglas County Sheriffs Office were in position on the shoulder of the interstate, 150 feet away from the suspect’s car and a hostage expert was on the scene. “He [the suspect] was making demands,” Hastings said. “He wanted a car, so he could get away, and cigarettes. We gave him the cigarettes hoping it would calm him down. ” After one hour of communication and ne gotiations between police and the suspect, police made the decision to end the situation as soon as possible. “His moods were really fluctuating; he kept threatening to kill the child,” Hastings said. “One of the members of the tactical team saw a chance and fired one shot which struck the suspect in the head, killing him instantly.” Jacobson was treated for minor injuries but was OK, according to Salem police. “Things like this don’t happen too often,” Hastings said. “But even once is too often.” Anyone with information regarding dam age to their vehicles as a result of the shoot ings is asked to contact Dan Wolverton at the Springfield Patrol Office at 726-2550.
