Food: Venture to 13th for a late snack

vendors in the EMU or a walk
down East 13th Avenue might be
your best bet for quality chow.
A sandwich or cold burrito
from the Fish Bowl Deli or a stack
of
cookies from the Main Desk
Store are good late-day foods. The
Breezeway Cafe is another good
afternoon option with their selec
tions of hand-dipped ice cream,
sundaes, shakes, coffee and pas
tries.
For something more filling,
stop by the EMU’s Taco Time Ex
press. Taco Time generally has
fresher, healthier and tastier food
than Taco Bell on 13th Avenue,
the other choice for fast, Mexi-cor
porate food close to campus. Taco
Time Express’ menu is slightly
different than other Taco Time lo
cations. One of Taco Times’ better
offerings is the Veggie Soft Taco.
A Veggie Soft, some Mexi-Fries
(Tater Tots), and some mediocre
EMU coffee is enough to get
through a two hour class. At
around $2, it's one of the cheaper
ways to fuel up.
The Skylight-To-Go on the
third floor of the EMU, serves
Asian cuisine, soup and a salad
bar. Seating is usually less crowd
ed than in the Fish Bowl and the
food is generally better. A plate of
veggies and rice from the Skylight
is one of the better lunches in the
EMU and is still reasonable at
about $4.
In the Fish Bowl, you can stop
by Little Caesar’s for a personal
pizza or Crazy Bread, try some
thing from the deli or choose from
the other ready-made food. Little
Caesar’s pizzas are one of the bet
ter options available in the EMU,
but a short walk down East 13th
Avenue will garner much better
pizza.
Just one block off campus, Sy’s
New York Pizza serves good piz
za at cheap prices in a smoke-free
environment. Offerings include
Neapolitan and deep-dish Sicilian
pizza (whole or by the slice), vege
tarian entrees and garlic knots.
For about the same price as EMU
pizza, you get more pizza, better

selection and the pizza is even
popped in the oven just before
serving to improve the crust.
The Glenwood Restaurant, one
block from campus, offers
healthy, good food at reasonable
prices. Breakfasts are especially
good. Quiche, pastas, salads,
burgers, homemade pastries,
soups, ethnic foods and some veg
etarian items round out their
menu. Upstairs and outside seat
ing are available. The Glenwood
is open 24 hours, except from 9
p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday.
Be prepared for a bit of a wait at
times-the food is worth it.
Rennie’s Landing is a popular
restaurant and bar right next to
campus. They have a full menu
until 10 p.m., but it’s 21-and-over
after 3 p.m. Rennie’s has a full bar:
wine, domestic beers and micro
brews. Food selections include
omelets, gourmet burgers, veggie
burgers, fish and chips, daily spe
cials, soups and salads.
Taylor’s Bar and Grille, located
across from the University Book
store, is another popular restau
rant and bar adjacent to campus.
In addition to a full menu and se
lection of microbrews, Taylor's
also serves breakfast in the morn
ing and features live music in the
evenings.
Another restaurant on East 13th
Avenue is China Blue. It is easy to
miss the front door of China Blue
with all the activity of 13th. After
eating there, however, your stom
ach will help you find the way
back. China Blue serves lunch,
dinner and a Sunday brunch.
Northern Chinese and Indonesian
cuisine dominate the menu. Dish
es are individually prepared,
wine and beer are offered and the
atmosphere is comfortable.
The diverse East 13th Avenue
restaurants offer some of the best
food in the campus area. It may
take a couple of tries but you
should be able to find some place
you like to eat between the EMU,
East 13th Avenue and the many
other restaurants around campus.
