■ CHAMBER MUSIC: Small
concerts to begin in October
for the University’s School
of Music
By Jean Bond
Entertainment Editor
The University’s School of Mu
sic begins its annual season of
world-class chamber music in Oc
tober with the National Chamber
Orchestra ofToulouse.
Chamber music is music per
formed by a small group, general
ly with only one player for each
part and meant to be heard in a
private room or small auditorium.
The intimate atmosphere of Beall
Concert Hall makes it a great
venue for this kind of perfor
mance.
The 11-member Toulouse or
chestra that opens the music
school’s Chamber Music Series
season features internationally
renowned flutist Michael Debost,
and will perform Vivaldi’s Con
certo for Flute, Op. 10, Nos. 2 and
3 and his Concertos for Violin,
Op. 8, The Four Seasons. The or
chestra will be the largest group to
perform in the series this year.
In November, the Brentano
String Quartet, winners of the
1995 Naumburg Chamber Music
Award, will perform Mozart’s
String Quartet in E-flat Major,
K.428, Berg’s Lyric Suite and
Beethoven’s String Quartet in B
flat Major, Op. 130.
After winter break, the series
will resume with the String Quar
tet. The Belgian quartet plays
Mozart and Haydn pieces for
quartets on period instruments to
recapture the sound of the 18th
Century.
The only trio to perform during
this year’s series is the Trio di Mi
lano in February, performing
Haydn’s Trio in G Major and
Beethoven’s Trio in E-flat Major
on their Stradivari instruments.
One of America’s finest piano
quartets, the Los Angeles Piano
Quartet will perform piano quar
tets by Beethoven, Turina and
Brahms.
Finishing the season will be the
first Russian quartet to perform
during the series, the Leontovych
String Quartet. The quartet,
which has won the Leo Weiner
International String Quartet Com
petition in Budapest, will play
quartets by Shostakovich, Svobo
da and Tchaikovsky.
