Hult Center promises a great upcoming season ■ PERFORMING ARTS: “Tommy” and The Reduced Shakespeare Company to visit Hult Center By Jean Bond Entertainment Editor The Hult Center for the Perform ing Arts is truly the centerpiece of Eugene's art culture. The center opened in 1982 and has since hosted many nationally and internationally known per formers. Recent performances at the Hult have included The Cure, Tori Amos, David Copperfield, Bobby McFerrin and the musical, "Cats." The Hult Center has something to offer everyone, and the upcom ing season is promising indeed. October highlights at the Hult include The Who's 1969 rock opera, “Tommy,” the story of a deaf, mute and blind young man, and Ki-YiM'Bock Theater Sunjata, a life-size shadow puppet theater that features African music and the legend of a young boy who must prove his worth to become king. In November, the Hult will pre sent the vaudevillian comedy of The Reduced Shakespeare Com pany's production of “The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged).” Also in November, the Gregorian Chant Choir of Spain will bring 12th century chants to the Hult. Next year, the Hult will host the Whirling Dervishes, the Flying Karamozov Brothers, Latin Elvis impersonator El Vez, a live perfor mance of Scholastic’s “The Magic School Bus” and the musical, “Kiss of the Spiderwoman. ” In addition to performers from all over the world, the Hult Center is home to the Eugene Ballet Com pany, the Oregon Mozart Players, the Dance Theatre of Oregon, the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and the Eugene Opera. The Eugene Ballet Company starts its season with a perfor mance of the classic Tchaikovsky ballet, “Swan Lake.” “Swan Lake” is the story of Odette, a beautiful young woman turned into a swan by an evil magician and saved by (who else?) a prince. During the winter holiday season, the compa ny performs Tchaikovsky's winter fantasy, “The Nutcracker.” The company will also perform “Cin derella,” a full-length ballet set to Prokofiev’s music and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue.” The Eugene Opera will present three operas during its season: Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammer moor” and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado.” “The Magic Flute” is a fairy tale that will be sung in English, as will “The Mikado,” a satirical operetta about the make-believe land of Titipu. The Hult Center’s newest resi dent company, The Dance Theatre of Oregon, will be celebrating its inaugural resident season with an October performance of “A Strange and Scary Night,” featur ing Mason William’s “Triskelion,” William Gordon’s “Necessary Evil” and new works inspired by Frank Zappa’s and Edgar Allan Poe’s works.
