Local cafes offer quality choices
■ CAFES: On campus brews
lack taste, but off-campus
brews decidedly better
By Jean Bond
Entertainment Editor
T ava. Cafe. Joe. Go juice. Nap
suppressant. Black gold. Cof
fee, that is. If you’re going to
^ survive in Eugene, and espe
cially if you plan to make it
through college, you need to know
where to get it.
On campus, there isn’t much
promise in the land of java. You
can get regular ccfffee at the dorms
and in the EMU, of course, but it’s
just not that good. You can get an
espresso, latte or cappuccino in
the EMU as well, but again, the
quality is lacking. Especially be
ware of the mocha in the EMU.
EMU mochas are made with a too
sweet cocoa powder, and the
mocha tastes...well, too sweet and
powdery.
But just off campus lies the cof
fee drinker's redemption. The best
coffee immediately off campus is
at Coffee People. Coffee People is
new to Eugene, but Portland na
tives have been living on this stuff
for years. The Velvet Hammer is a
great Mexican mocha, and the
Mindsweeper, a latte made with
Coffee People's Black Tiger, an ex
tra caffeinated bean, is a sure bet
for midterms. Even their regular
coffee is excellent if you want
something cheap and simple. Un
fortunately, Coffee People is often
crowded, and a bit more expen
sive than other cafes, but the quali
ty is worth the wait. With every
regular coffee to go, they offer a
voucher for a free refill, so buy a
coffee before class and have anoth
er-on the house-after class.

REVIEW
Bookstore is not a Starbucks, but
serves Starbucks coffee. They also
suffer the same problem Starbucks
has encountered as the company
has grown: Their coffee just isn’t
what it used to be. Starbucks cof
fee used to be the yardstick by
which other coffee was judged;
now it’s mediocre and too expen
sive. The same goes for the Duck
Stop. The Duck Stop's coffee and
espresso drinks are fine, but prob
ably not a first choice.
The Udinese Caffe/Caffe Orsini,
the little free-standing coffee stand
across the street from the book
store does much better. The mo
chas and lattes are quite good, and
each day they feature a special lat
te for less than two bucks. The lat
te special is a bargain because cus
tomers can have any size, with a
double or single shot of espresso,
for the same price. Some of the
fancier specials, like the Almond
Joy latte, can be too sweet because
several kinds of syrup go into the
latte. Ask the barista to take it easy
on the syrup in that case.
Farther off campus, Java Joe's of
fers coffee, jazz and games that cus
tomers can play. Joe's even offers a
chess night and a Scrabble night.
The Beanery makes good
espresso drinks, but like the EMU,
they make mochas with a powder.
The Beanery’s chocolate powder
isn’t too sweet, but it doesn’t dis
solve. At the bottom of a mocha
from the Beanery is a gritty pow
der that makes the last of the
mocha un drinkable.
Jamocha's Espresso Cafe fea
tures a fun atmosphere and a dri
ve-through window, in case
you’re in a hurry.
So, welcome to Eugene. Now
