Student health center offers array of services ■ WELL BEING: Health care on campus is available for all enrolled students seven days a week By April Carmichael for the Oregon Daily Emerald College students have a lot to worry about, from classes to so cial interaction. But they don’t have to fret about their mental or physical health with the Student Health Center and the Counseling Center nearby. “One of the reasons it’s impor tant to let the students know about the health center is because most students don’t think they are going to get sick,” said Gerald Fleischli, medical director of the Student Health Center. “But the reality is that in any one year, three-fourths of the students will use the center at least once.” The health center has a staff of more than 100, including a dozen clinicians and numerous board certified physicians. The physi cians have many different special ities, including family practice, internal examination, pediatrics, gynecology, allergy and psychia try. Some of the services the center provides are diagnosis and treat ment of illnesses and injuries, ur gent care, dental services, allergy skin testing, a women’s health care clinic, mental health coun seling, physical therapy and sports medicine, x-ray services, a medical laboratory and pharmacy services. “One thing many people don’t realize is that during the regular term, we are open seven days a week,” said Fleischli. “Students can come on the weekend to be treated here, where it is much cheaper than at an emergency room.” The charge to see a clinician at the health center is $3, while Fleischli estimates a trip to the hospital emergency room can run about $100. Regular students of the Univer sity can use the health center fa cilities, and most fees are already paid by the health fee, which is built into tuition. For services that are not cov ered by the health fee, students can send the bill to their insur ance companies. If they don’t have insurance, they can pur chase some from the health cen ter. Payment plans are also avail able. The health center deals with more than just students’ physical health. University services are also here to help students main tain their mental and psychologi cal fitness. The counseling center is in place for that very reason. Group counseling as well as in dividual help is available. “Some of the groups focus on eating disorders, personal issues, and children of alcoholics,” Jon Davies, a psychologist who works in the counseling center, said. “In the past, we have had groups for students who are older than the average student, women’s issues and sex abuse issues. Groups are set up when the need arises for them.” Relationship counseling for couples, as well as counseling that deals with concerns between faculty members and students can be arranged. All services are free of charge, and any enrolled student is eligi ble to receive them. The center has drop-in hours, during which time any student can come in for a consultation with a therapist. Pass it on. (please) Help our successful recycling program on campus by putting the Oregon Dally Emerald back in its original rack when you've finished reading it.
