New unifoims, new bicycle change the face of OPS By Kristin Bailey University Editor The 19 officers of the Office of Public Safety look a little differ ent this year. And their director says they’ve got a new attitude — and a new bike — to go along with their new look. “We’re walking our talk,” OPS Director Stan Reeves said. “We want to distinguish ourselves from other law enforcement agencies. Our new uniforms will help establish our presence, and they lend to a higher profile.” OPS officers began sporting the navy blue pants and white shirts over the summer. “The other uniforms were mundane and drab,” Reeves said of the outfits’ brown predeces sors. “They blended into the crowd.” User-friendly service will ac cessorize the new uniforms, Reeves said. “We’ve got a more progressive philosophy and approach to pub lic safety,” Reeves said. “The cus tomer comes first. We’re here to serve the University community. We’re looking to change a lot about our service delivery.” On the agenda of changes is the introduction of an OPS bicy cle patrol officer. The addition of the pedaling patroller will im prove safety services, Reeves said. “This will put an officer out and about,” he said. “We’ll be able to assess areas normally not accessible by vehicles. It will also improve response time and com munity relations. We’re covering a lot of bases. It’s really an advan tage.” Part of the bike officer’s duties will include parking lot patrol and bicycle safety awareness.
