USC tailback suspended for opener
■ PAC-10: Delon Washington
will miss the Kickoff Classic
while serving a non-football
related one-game suspension
By John Nadel
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES—Delon Wash
ington, Southern California’s lead
ing rusher last season, was sus
pended Tuesday because of a
non-football related rule violation
and will miss Sunday’s Kickoff
Classic against Penn State.
Washington, a junior who be
came the Trojans’ first 1,000-yard
rusher since 1990 with 236 carries
for 1,109 yards, had recovered
from a pulled hamstring and was
set to start against the 1 lth-ranked
Nittany Lions.
“USC became aware of a viola
tion, a one-time happening,” USC
coach John Robinson said. “He
has acknowledged the violation.
The violation was not connected
to his involvement with our foot
ball team.
“The process is we suspend
him and apply for reinstatement.
USC has taken that action on its
own. I can’t talk any more about it,
so I can’t answer any questions.”
Rodney Sermons and LaVale
Woods will share the tailback du
ties for the seventh-ranked Trojans
against Penn State.
“There’s not too much I can
say,” Washington said in a state
ment issued by the school. “I’ll
persevere. All I can do is accept
the situation and just go on. I’ll
cheer on my teammates in the
opener and prepare myself for the
next game.”
As a freshman in 1994, Wash
ington gained 109 yards on 10 car
nes m a 24-17
victory over
Washington,
and then led
USC in rush
ing with 44
yards on nine
carries in 38
14 loss at
Penn State.
Before the
season’s third
game, USC
WASHINGTON
decided to
withhold him from competition
while questions regarding his eli
gibility, which was certified by the
NCAA, were being resolved.
Those questions weren’t
cleared up until late in the season,
and Washington didn’t play again
until USC’s 55-14 victory over
Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl.
“These guys are ready to go,”
Robinson said. “Woods and Ser
mons have had really good camps.
Both were plagued by injuries last
year. Both did very well when
they weren’t hurt.”
Sermons, a junior, was USC’s
second-leading rusher last year,
gaining 244 yards on 60 carries. He
also caught 12 passes for 86 yards.
Woods, another junior, gained 146
yards on 28 carries last year.
Even before the suspension,
USC entered the season inexperi
enced on offense. Now, because of
the suspension and injuries to
wide receiver Larry Parker and of
fensive lineman Phalen Pounds,
the only starter on offense from
last year who will play against
Penn State is quarterback Brad Ot
ton.
"I think we have two teams who
are rather unsettled,” Robinson
said. “On offense, we will start six
players who have not played
much. We’re more settled on de
fense. As I look at the season, I
think this team needs to spend the
next month, five weeks, trying to
get better.
“This game cannot influence
us. If we lose and people say we’re
not good, we can’t listen. If we win
and people say we’re real good, we
can’t listen.”
Robinson said Travis Claridge
will start at right guard, becoming
the first freshman offensive line
man to start an opener for USC
since Brad Budde in 1979. Clar
idge, 18, is from Vancouver, Wash.
Usher accuses Rodman of pinching
■ LAWSUIT: Dennis Rodman
may have to pay $750,000
for a 1994 pinching incident
By Kimberley Murphy
The Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY — A Delta
Center usher who claims Dennis
Rodman humiliated her by pinch
ing her on the buttocks during an
NBA game, has filed suit seeking
$750,000 in damages.
Lavon Ankers alleges Rodman
chased a loose ball out of bounds
on May 5,1994, then pinched her
while returning to the court dur
ing a game between the Utah Jazz
and the San Antonio Spurs, for
whom he was playing at the time.
"The touching and pinching
was witnessed by bystanders and
spectators,” according to the civil
suit filed last week in U.S. District
Court.
The suit also states that a local
television broadcast of the game
shows Rodman walking past
Ankers, turning around and “ap
parently touching her on the
backside.”
NBA officials have refused to
release copies of the broadcast be
cause the incident is now under
litigation, said Joel Litvin, of the
league’s legal department.
Ankers “was and continues to
be greatly humiliated, shamed,
embarrassed; and endured great
mental suffering,” according to
the suit.
Ankers’ attorney, Harry Caston,
said Tuesday he and his client de
cided to file the suit after receiv
ing no response from Rodman’s
agent in their attempt to resolve
the matter without litigation.
“Frankly, she didn’t invite or in
any way ask Rodman to touch or
pinch her on the buttocks,” Cas
ton said. “It’s been something that
she doesn’t think is funny and
never thought was funny ... and
it’s undignified.”
