Hurricane Bertha
bears down on Florida
1 JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla.
— Hurricane Bertha churned
toward Florida with 105 mph
winds Wednesday after missing a
predicted turn to the north, and
nearly 1 million people along the
Atlantic Seaboard were urged to
pack up and leave.
An estimated 500,000 people
were ordered to evacuate six
Florida counties.
A hurricane warning, meaning
hurricane-force wind of 74 mph
or more or dangerously high tide
were expected within 24 hours,
was posted from the Cape
Canaveral area north to the Vir
ginia state line.
Oregon firefighters
battle wildfires
2 PORTLAND — Firefighters
hope by Thursday to contain a
1,300-acre fire that briefly threat
ened the central Oregon town of
Warm Springs.
Elsewhere, about 220 firefight
ers fought a 300-acre blaze inside
the Mount Jefferson Wilderness
area outside of Sisters.
In Eastern Oregon, 80 miles
southeast of Bums, a 5,400-acre
fire was burning on range land
and juniper forests.
Also in Eastern Oregon, fire
fighters controlled a 2,270-acre
grass fire started by lightning on
federal lands in the remote high
desert east of Jordan Valley. That
is now controlled.
Mother charged with
negligence for death
3MEDFORD — A homeless
woman has been charged with
negligent homicide in the death
of a 6-year-old boy who died
when the woman’s car ran off a
100-foot embankment because it
allegedly had no brakes.
Amarylla Kate Burrell, 19, was
driving outside the small commu
nity of Ruch on Tuesday when
the car plunged off the embank
ment.
Peter Escalante Zamora III was
crushed in the wreckage.
Burrell was released from the
Jackson County Jail, where she
had been held on $15,000 bail
pending arraignment in Jackson
County District Court.
Serbs block mass
grave excavation
4 SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegov
ina — Finnish forensic experts
were forced to abort their excava
tion of a mass grave in eastern
Bosnia because Serbs blocked
their work.
The Bosnian Serbs failed to
keep promises to provide securi
ty at Kravice, 10 miles west of
Srebrenica. The work would be
too dangerous without such guar
antees.
A separate excavation of mass
graves continued in nearby Cers
ka, where 40 bodies had been
found by late this afternoon.
A team from the U.N. war
crimes tribunal began work Sun
day guarded by the NATO-led
peace force.
Kevorkian assists
in another suicide
5 DETROIT — Dr. Jack
Kevorkian helped a 39-year
old woman with multiple sclero
sis commit suicide with a drug
injection and took the body to a
hospital himself, confident that
the “era of harassment and perse
cution” is over.
It was the 33rd suicide in
which Kevorkian has taken part
since 1990. In practically all of
the previous cases, the patients
died by inhaling carbon monox
ide.
Kevorkian and another doctor
took the body of Rebecca Badger
of Goleta, Calif., to Pontiac Osteo
pathic Hospital late Tuesday.
No immediate charges were
filed. None have been filed in the
last several suicides.
Spaniards no match
for running bulls
6PAMPLONA, Spain — Nine
Spaniards were injured
Wednesday during Pamplona’s
famous running of the bulls and
one celebrant was found dead,
apparently of an alcohol over
dose.
The body of Jose Antonio Alda,
42, was found in the Plaza del
Castillo, where many revelers
sleep during the nine-day Fiesta
de San Fermin.
State television said the man
died of an alcohol overdose, but
police said the cause and time of
death could not be determined
with certainty until after an au
topsy.
A total of 28 runners, including
seven foreigners, have been treat
ed for injuries during four days of
bull runs.
