Waters is
more than a
great coach
It seems like only yester
day that 1 met Charlie
Waters for the first time
Last spring I walked
into the new Oregon defen
sive coordinator's office as a
nervous. 19 year old aspir
ing sports reporter, fretting
about asking an NFL legend
about coaching at the colle
giate level, l was sweaty
palmed, had butterflies in
my stomach — the whole
nine yards.
I had my set of questions
all ready to go and my story
all out
lined in
advance
— two
things t

But before
1 could
even get
the first
question

out of my mouth. Water*
beat me to the punch
He proceeded to question
me about my life — every
thing from what paper I
worked for to what I was
studying and what I wanted
to do alter college From
what I could tell. Waters
fust wanted to know a little
about the person who was
going lo ask him questions
for the next 20 minutes

Brisk, but not cold.
The week after the Ducks
beat IXXA, I caught up
with Waters after t practice
to talk about the Oregon
defense Another journalist
was waiting to interview
him, and I was supposed lo

when the first pause in
questioning came. I saw it

in I asked Waters if Stan
