COTTON BOWL
OREGON VS COLORADO
Present day Ducks similar to ’49 squad
■ FLASHBACK: Norm Van

m the Cotton Bowl
By Chris Stewart

The 194B Oregon football team
headed into tlie 1949 Cotton
Bowl with a squad many (billed
the le-vt on the West Coast The
Ducks' opponent was Southern
Methodist, a team that boasted
1 948 lleisman Trophy winner
and two-time All-American run
ning hack Doak Walker
The trip to the 1*149 Cotton
Howl Classic was the first post
season appearam e by an ()n>>on
squad since it lost to Harvard 7
fi in the 1920 Rose Bowl
aw I was the favorite even
though both teams came into the
game with only one loss It was
the m« and straight trip to the Cot
ton How l for the talented Mus
tangs and they were hungry for
victory after tying Penn State 1 i
13 the year before
The Wehfoots had lieetl 7-3 the
vaar before and were ft-1 in 4H
coming into the New Year's Day
bowl under the gmdunce of sec
ond \ ear coach Jim Aiken
This game featured two great
(juarierbat ks in Oregon s Norm
Van Brockhn and the Mustangs'
(•illtert Johnson But Doak Walk
er would have tlies spotlight for
most of the game
Walker scored the games first
tom hdown on Southern Meth
odist's opening possession to give
the Mustangs the early 7-0 advan
tage Walker would have 60
yards rushing. 7‘t yards passing
and one i atch for seven yards

One of Walker's l>est plays came
in the form of special teams.
Facing a second down and
eight in the first period Walker
got the bail and began running
right, but before anyone could fig
ure out what was going on Walk
er had done a quick kick and his
punt sailed 79 yards, setting a
Cotton Howl record.
As rw unis are made to be bro
ken however, Mustangs running
back Kyle Rote kicked out of his
own end /orte with a booming
punt that landisl dead on the Ore
gon 12-vard line and was offi
cial!) recorded as an 84 yard
punt Thu kick is still a record.
Rote was the player who would
provide the only scoring of the
third quarter as he darted into the
end /one from Hi yards out to
culminate an 80-vard drive that
gave SMU a 14 0 advantage going
into the fourth quarter.
The Webfoots refused to die
ami Van Hrocklin hil wide receiv
er Dick Wilkin# for a 24-yard
scoring strike and the Mustangs
lead had been cut to 14-6.
SMI' would answer on its next
possession with a drive that went
5ft yards in eight plays ending in
an eight-yard torn hdown run by
Chit ken Roberts The drive ate
four minutes off of the clock and
gave the Mustangs a 21-fi lead.
Van Hrocklin kept his team
alive as the Webfoots answered
when Darrel Robinson had a 42
vard reception that set up a one
yard touchdown plunge by Hob
Sanders. Oregon trailed 21-13
with six minutes left to play
The Mustangs looked to put
the game away on the next pos
session but the Oregon defense
held SMU on its own lft-yard line
and got the ball back on downs
The Webfoots would give a
good effort but they came up
short as Van Hrocklin was
dragged down at the 47-yard line
to ena me game.
When the Ducks take the field
in Dallas on Jan. 1, 199f>, it will
bo vxih tlv 4 7 years since Oregon
last played in the Cotton Bowl,
and there are some similarities
between the two teams
It was only the second loss of
the season for the VVebfoots in a
season that ended with a 9-2
record, coincidentally the same
record the 1995 Oregon football
team has right now
Oregon also heat UCLA 26-7
and Oregon State 10-0 during
the year. The Webfoots swept
the Northwest schools by beat
ing Washington and Washington
State, just as they did this year,
and went into the game under
dogs, just hke they are this year.
