COMPUTERS ‘Command & Conquer’ delivers strategic challenge to players By Joshua Olson Gutrw tcHkx Command ft (Jonqurr !!*(CD ROM) takes plat i’ in Earth s future, where the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and « multinational terrorist group t ailed the Brotherhood of Nod are engaged in a worldwide bat tie for money and power An extraterrestrial substaru e called Tib«rium, which was delivered to Karth by a stray meteor, has become more sought after than gold because of its unusual and valuable properties Tiberium grows in the soil, ieet hing pro* ious met als and gems from underground and depositing them in crystals on the surface, ready to be mined. In Command ft Conquer, you control the forces of the GDI or the Brotherhood in their struggle for global dominant e Mining Tiberium deposits for cash sup ply. you build up technology and an atmv and try to conquer the opponent When playing against the computer, you confront a series of strategic combat missions to win the game. Missions are assigned by live at lor video clips of your commander, which develop their plots between missions When playing Nod. keep in mind that you're work ing for terrorists' Command & Conquer Virpn Infr'ii fiw Fnltrummou ★ ★★★ Playing the tanm side twice doesn't mean you'll play th«“ same missions Each assignment offers you a choice of regions to at tack, so each time you play the missions should Iks different. Ka< h mission has a unique goal, which varies from com mando raids to stealing technol ogy to all-out annihilation of the enemy. As the game progresses, you gain technology to build more advanced buildings, troops and vehicles Once you get bored beating the computer, gather one to three of your closest friends (or enemies) end trounce them in a n tit work or modem game Command tr Conquer come* with two CD* (one cmk h for GDI and Nod) so you can give one to « friend and play head-to head without buying two copies of the game til addition to the challenge of pinvmg against real jwopie. mul tiplayer games allow you to set a number of options, such as tech nologv level and world size Unfortunately. Command & Conquer doesn't support ran dom levels in single player mode If you don't have any friends, you'll have to work your way up to the advanced tech nology missions. Probably the most common < riticism of Command Con quer is its lack of SuperVGA graphics. The game could cer tainly benefit from higher-reso lution graphics but is still quite playable without them. Command & Conquer will appeal to fans of such games as Dune ll and Warcraft. Its strate gic game play will keep you i hallenged, and its wide array of tec hnology will keep you inter ested. Command /r Conquers great est appeal is probably in its mul tiplayer functionality after the computer missions are exhaust ed. Anyone for a campus C'.&C league? Pitch in!
