Microbrew holiday beer a real treat

Beer enthusiasts and con
sumers will have plenty of bever
ages to choose from as Eugene's
five microbreweries churn out
hundreds of gallons of dark, spe
cialized beer that are only avail
able during the holiday season

drums that hold as much as 450
gallons of beer, David Sohigian.

doesn't have quite enough beer
to keep up with demand
"Sales have been great, but
we're going to run out — real
fast," Sohigian said of the hop
scotch ale. a full-bodied, malt
beer that has been a hit with
restaurant patrons.
After the hop scotch ale is
gone, no more will be brewed,
Sohigian said But the Field's
brewer is planning on putting out
15 barrels of marionberry porter
for consumers this week He said
he also began brewing an oat
meal stout Thursday, and the
stout will be available for con
sumption in three weeks.
At Steelhead Brewery, general
manager Jeff Passerotti said, he
hopes that his restaurant's holi
day brew — a wild rice beer that
is yet to be named — is as suc
cessful as last year's Rose Bowl
bitter and ginger ale.
If the wild rice beer catches on
with Eugene patrons. 310 gallons
of the beverage could be gone in
two weeks, Passerotti said
Steelhead Brewery will also be
selling a sparkling, hard cider
during the winter.
Since the Ducks are going to
the Cotton Bowl, Passerotti said
that his brewery may put a Cotton
Bowl beer on the market as well.
High Street Cate and Brewery
and East 19th Cate will botn have
their popular Kris Kringle, a
smooth beer produced by Edge
field Breweries, available again in
December. The Kris Knngle is
made from such ingredients as
star amse, chamomile, nutmeg,

West Brothers Barbecue and
Mona Lisa restaurant are also
marketing a holiday beer called
Ponderosa Porter, a dark, thick
beverage that will be served tor
the tirst time in several years,
head brewer Tim Barr said
The Old Curmudgeon barley
wine, a wine fermented from
beer, will be available for con
sumption at Mona Lisa restau
rant.
Eugene residents as well as
Oregon beer drinkers are spoiled
when it comes to their choice of
microbrewed beer. Sohigtan said
of Field’s brewery
'Oregon's a hotbed for beer,"
he said "It's well known all over
the country that Oregon is the
best place to go"
According to the Oregon Brew
er's Guild, Oregon has more
small breweries and brew pubs
per capita than anywhere else in
the United States The guild also
said that 30 percent of the world's
hops are grown in the Northwest,
and that the Klamath Basin atone
produced 30,000 tons ot malt
barley each year
