Where to Dine, Where to Save
By Mark Sack}
If you love
Mexican food as
much as I do, oper

net and like to eat
healthy, I have
some answers lor yon
The key lo good nutntion is nuking
smart choices It s important to get
enough of some food items and not
too much of others According to the
food pyramid developed In the Tinted
States Department of Agric ulture. you
should emphasize grains. Irmts ami
vegetables in your daih diet while
watching out for too many lats anil
sugars
llie hulk of your diet should con
sist of gram based carbohydrates such
as breads, and c ereals laco shells and
tortillas, as well as seasoned rue. pro
vide an excellent source of carbohv
drates With tacos, soft tac os, hurritos,
nachos and tostatlas to choose from,
you’ll always find several great tasting
ways to make grains the healthy base
of your balanced diet
Fruits and vegetables are at the next
level and therefore should make up
the second largest portion of your
diet So choose a tostada or a taco
salad to find plenty of crisp lettuce,
rij>e tomatoes and onions

Going Mexican
When it i omes to Mexican food,
more money does not mean healthier
food In fai t, the contrary is more
accurate In my quest to find the all
around (vest Mexican lood in town, I
was able to classify the restaurants m
three different categories i l F*n,
inexjxnsive, anti fairly healthy restate
rants 2 ) Restaurants providing a sit
down meal, slightly more costly, but
lairly healthy i )Those featuring a
very nice atmosphere ysith vary ing
prices, but more calories
In im estimate, category number
one contains three of Eugene s finest
dining establishments,Taco lu ll (‘the
border*}.
Mat hcesmo
Mouse ('the
mouse*). and. last hut not least,Taco
lime ("Taco lime*) (The last two
nicknames are mine l*hcy are not
copyrighted. however, so feel free to
use them) I classified these three
restaurants in the first group because
thc> lit all of its criteria Depending
on the si/e of your order, your watt

any of the three restaurants At “the
(order* the average meal receipt is
$2 2*), at 'the mouse* you tan exjH-i t a
hill closer to S’ (X). and at Taco Time it
will most likely tost you around OS
* lhe mouse* is the only tine of the
three with an exclusively healthy
menu but all three do provide nutri
tional information and you will find
that if you order wisely you tan cat
healthier at any of these restaurants
than you could at a submarine sand
