Weasel: It’s a way of life for Norris
■ Continued from page 11
that were "just plain stupid."
We paid him only $4 a strip, but
the popularity Weasel drew to
himself (and Norris) was appar
ently well worth the taste of
cheaper Inter
"I did set some heated letters
to the editor — mainly from
people who took themselves too
seriously." Norris says. "I also
met some loyal fans who hove
unfortunately dispersed to other
parts of the country hut are still
wearing my T-shirts and buying
my cards."
Oh yeah . the greeting cards
After completing his degree in
history, Norris pa< ked up his
belongings, throw Weasel In the
track seat and dragged the two to
Portland where they are now
trying to make a living by using
their humor to make others
laugh. Single panels of Weasel's
World have been converted to
greeting cards that t an now be
found in more than .20 stores
throughout Otegon, Washington
and California, including Paper
Moon and Simply Magic in
Eugene.
"I basically just said. 'This is
what I like to do and let's see if
1 can make a living out of it and
if not. them's always a comer on
13th. "' Norm says “It has been
frustrating at times trying to
make ends meet, hut my feeling
is that those cards an- something
that is going to fly. I think it's
more important to make people
laugh, and if I can go to a store
and see that people have bought
my cards and they're making
others laugh, then the struggle is
worth it
If you like Norris' sense of
humor in W’eose/'s World, you'll
love his greeting cards They
range from a birthday card that
has Abe Lincoln rei eiving the
ater tit kets on his birthday to
Elvis Presley joining the three
kings on Christmas And for
$1 SO. they're a hell of a lot
cheaper than Hallmark
Although the cards are sell
ing weli, Norris admits his
career as a cartoonist is being
supplemented by a secondary
job on the side, waiting tables
He is now trying to raise enough
money to print another 16
designs in the hopes that with a
card line totaling more than -40.
a sales representative will
notice the line and join him in
his efforts.
"It's now just a matter of get
ting the money to do it.'' Norris
says. "Doing a printing of 16
design* cost# about $4.IKK),
which it a ni< e i hunk of i honge
to have up-front on something
(hat can I** fitting in your office
for several month* It's a busi
ness of volume whore the more
stores you get, the more cards
they will buy and the more you
can t lear out of your office. If I
ever need to wallpaper any
room though. I'll have plenty of
designs to choose from."
Norris says he also has
enough rejection letters from
syndicates to wallpaper the
< oiling as well, but thankfully
the laidback spirit and humor
behind Weasel keeps him going
I just remember to stay cool,
grab a Inter and hope the nest
letter will let a better one."
And in the meantime'
"Pm continuing my crusade
to i hsnge the bed image that
weasels have gotten," Norris
says. "It was my fraternity
pledge name so I feel compelled
to let people know the truth
Weasels are just wirey little
guvs who happen !o like i htck
en. and when we are cornered,
we lunge for people's throats
It's our cousins the possums
who make the rest of us look
bod."
