The University School of
Law has been busy this summer
preparing for the influx of stu
dents toting laptop computers
this fall.
Now that every law student
is required to own a computer,
the s< hool has been working to
adequately accommodate the
equipment and help students to
lake full advantage of the
requirement
The computers will be used
primarily for word processing
and for interaction with other
law students, teachers and pro
fessionals Many new students'
computers will be equipped
only with a word processor,
network applications and data
base search software
The law school has installed
Ethernet ports all over the
building with more coming
soon in classrooms, said Mitch
Davis, director of information
technology for the school. The
ports allow students to plug in
and utilize network resources
such as laser printers and e
mail.
A service known as
MelroUom Radtolmk is also
being tested by the law school
for use by students. Davis said
It allows students to connect to
the University network from
any point in the Eugene
Spnngfield area via a radio sig
nal.
Davis said that the law
school has set up videoconfer
encing software for use by grad
uate students who wish to con
fer with people us far away as
South Africa. The software
allows realtime visual and
audio communication over the

The impact of the requirement
on the Computing Center has
been minimal, said Joanne Hugh
director of the center
'Most of the load has fallen
onto the law si hool." Hugi said
"It has lieen a joint projei t with
most of the effort on their part,
including orchestrating all of the
training "
