by launching an NCAA qualify*
ing murk of 174-2 on her first
attempt. That mark easily
earned her the victory and was
the first time this year that Stel
lick had thrown over 165 feel.
Jenna Carlson was a Duck
warrior, garnering a victory in
the 3,000-meter run just two
hours after barely missing out
on the same result in the 5,000
meters
The dramatics of the 5.000
will be recalled by most from
the meet's distance events.
Nebraska's Theresa Stalling
paced the event with Carlson
hovering over her shoulder as
the duo pulled away from the
pack early. It stayed that way
until the final bell-lap turn
when Carlson swung around
Stalling's hip and the two
kicked their way to an electric
finish. With the Hayward Field
crowd standing and cheering,
the duo leaned at the finish lino
with the Comhusker getting the
nod by mere centimeters
Slotting and Carlson finished
with NCAA provisional times of
16 minutes, 32.98 seconds and
16 33, respectively, and offered
the fans a rare 5,000 ending.
“Usually the 5 is spread out,"
CUirlson said at the end of the
day. “(Losing at the stretch] got
my competitive fire going
because ! was upset to lose by
that much.
"That was a tough double, hut
I knew 1 didn't have any pres
sure in the 3 so I just wanted to
compete really well It didn't
had ns bad as 1 thought it would
have.”
Even so. Carlson is quick to
point out that she will not
attempt a double of that magni
tude again if she doesn’t have to.
It's likely that she won't have to
since her marks in the 3,000 and
5.000 should be enough to
reserve a spot at nationals.

brought about an emotional
farewell for Oregon's Camara
Jones
The sprinting star paid her
final goodbyes to the Hayward
Field crowd by easily taking the
auu-metor sprint while fittingly
leting the final Oregon women's
runner of the day.
Jones captained the 4x100
relay squad to an NCAA provi
sional qualifying 45.32 second
mark and ended her Eugene
career by pushing the 4x400
team to an NCAA provisional
mark of 3:38.51.
"I'm glad I got to finish up this
way.” she said. “Oregon is the
best place ever in the world to
run. 1 was lur ky to be spoiled for
four years.
“The fans give me so much
inspiration when I run. When 1
came off the comer, I could just
(tear the roar and that's just
amazing because that doesn't
happen anywhere "
Taking second-piece honors
for Oregon in the field events
were Niki Stillian in the discus.
Katie Pearmine in the javelin
and Sara Jessie with a new
school record of 42-6 in the
triple jump.
