and the police, in an effort to
improve the police's attitude
toward students.
Farnam said he would like to
change the way police officers
treat students. "I’ve seen people
handcuffed while getting noise
violations," Farnam said
They hope that by meeting
with government representa
tives on a personal basis they
can convey the message that
University students arc* com
munity members who pump
money into the Eugene econo
my and deserve to he treated
with more respect.
As roommates the two have
also experienced first-hand a
.$S0 increase in their rent from
last year and believe rent
increases are unfair to students.
They suggest setting up a dis
trict where rents are more rea
sonable
"We're paying exorbitant rent
for sub standard housing,” Far
nam said.
The two said they have been
on the receiving end for too long
and feel that the best way to
approach government officials is
as the voice of the University's
17,000 student body
"We want to have a standing
when we talk to them," Elder
said. Neither has had lobbying
experience in the past
Another campaign issue they
would like to work on is to get
MATT UAH TO*, i
students involved in lobbying
against outs to finam lal aid.
“The way we differ from the
other candidates in the area of
finanoiai aid is we will actively
encourage and facilitate rallies,
demonstrations and marches to
make it known that students
don't want their financial aid
cut," Faniain said
