Registration could help recover stolen bicvcles

Bicycle thieves look to the
< ampu* area as a ripe hurtling
ground to ply their trade liasy
pickings and a nearly unlimited
selection of high-priced moun
tain hikes make the campus a
target tough to reject.
And it seems that every time
an "indestructible lock hits the
streets, thieves find a way to
i orn promise the new its h no lo
gy. Sure, students take precau
tions like parking a bike in a
well-traveled and lighted area,
hut theft i ontinues
One way to protiw t a bicycle
is to register it with the Offic u of
Public Safety Since locks pose
little duterrent to thieves, having
the model, i olor and serial num
her of a hike on file with OPS
will substantially iiw reuse (tie
i hances of recovery should theft
occur.
"I would say that roughly 80
percent of stolen hikes recov
tired on campus are returned to
the owners." said Carey Dray
ton. director of OPS. “In largo

Students can register their
bicycles for free with OPS dur
ing regular business hour*
Determining ownership of
stolen bicycles is a recurring
problem. Student* wanting to
< laim a recovered bicycle often
cennot prove ownership with a
sales receipt or serial number.

recorded hy OPS
Of the approximate 110-120
bicycles currently in possession
of OPS. Drayton said 70 are
unregistered and will probably
never lm relumed to the owner
If an individual gets his hike
stolen and comes here to claim
it after we recover it without the
proper doi umnnialion. he'll
never get it back." he said "If
the bike is registered, there is no
hassle because we can verify
ownership "
