trian team to loose concentration this weekend.
In their first real season of competition the
team has exceeded all expectations in being
ranked in the top five most of the year Insist week
end at Stanford in f’alo Alto, (loiif the Equestrian
team, compiled mostly of first year riders,
snatched first plm e a wav from the heavily favored
Ordinal,
It was the team's second first plm a showing of
the season and vaulted them to s»s and plm « over
all in the West coast points rm e, behind only Stan
ford.

With established Equestrian schools such as
Fresno. IJSC. Cal Poly. Pomona, t ?(' Davis. UC San
Diego and Stanford all competing this weekend

Raiders fire Shell in hopes of Super Bowl

Shell, a Hall of Fame tackle,
was fired by Los Angeles owner

"He was one of the great con
tributors we have ever had."
Davis said.
Davis said he wants a Super
Bowl title and needs a new
coach to get there "I'm not the
coach here, I don't want to be,"
Davis said when asked about his
hands-on approach. "I'm the
owner of the team, it's my team.
"I go to practice twice a week

Shell played for the Raiders in
Oakland and Los Angeles from
J 968-82 and was inducted into
the Hall of Fame in 1989 He
became an assistant coach with
the team in I<>83.
Shell's overall record with the
Raiders, counting playoff games,
was 56-41. They made the play
offs in three of his five full sea
sons.
"We want to win the Super
Howl," said Davis, whose
Haiders were the most recent
AFC team to at i omplish the feat
— ill 1984. "I felt if we were
going to get there, we would
have to change the environment
I offered this job to no one else
"I’ve known about Mike
White for 40 years ! watt hud
him grow, become an assistant
coach. His history, his records,
are tremendously unique. I
think he comes extremely qual
ified, he has a vibrant personali
ty."
Davis wouldn't divulge terms
of White* coni rat t. saying only,

Davis said he told Shell of the
change Wednesday night

hours, feminist ing." Davis said
"Art is a part of rav life He's
going to do well, he's going to tie
OK."
Shell spoke briefly before
leaving the Raiders' headquar
ters more than an hour before
the new s conference
"I'm going to look for another
job," he said I want to stay in
coaching."
It's been reported Shell might
hook on with the Miami Dol
phins as offensive line coach.
