OUR FAVORITES
CHRIS FOX S TOP FIVE OF 1994
1 Green Day —
Dookrtr I'm really
happy these guys
were a success this
yeai I would like to
think that their rise to
lame is because their
music is not only good to
listen to. but it is also
tun My choice for
Garage Band of the
Year, Green Day's
Dookto was a surprise to
everyone They had
muddy fun at Woodstock
and three songs become
quite popular I can only
suggest that you listen to
them if you haven't
already
2Voruca Salt —
Am&ncan Thtghs
Another band that
came out oI relative
obscurity. Veruca Salt
seem to have a good ms*
of talent They are my
second chotce because I
like Green Day better,
but they still have a good
sound Then album
American Th/ghs ts easy
to listen to and has a
good assortment ot
songs
3 Offspring — Smash
When I first heard
these guys. my friend
Ben jumped up arid said.
■This is that song I've
been toiling you about'*
and we proceeded to
mosh around the living
room. I’m glad that more
punk music » starting to
take oft and that these
groups are becoming
recognized The aB>um
Smash is definitely good
to listen to, especially if
you loel like being
rowdy An all-around
good album with interest
ing guitar use
4Sugar — File Under
Easy Listening Bob
Mould is still doing
what ho does boat, mak
ing music that is really
good The second
album by Sugar. File
Under Easy Listening
has everything that an
album needs to make
you want to listen to it
over and over I listen to
this abum often, and it
keeps getting better
each t»me I'm hoping
that Mould and his tno
keep producing the qual
ity music that this album
has. so I can keep listen
ing to it
5Black Happy —
Peghfktct I realty dis
covered this band in
1994, but their last
album was 1993's
Paghead. Unfortunately,
the band appears to be
breaking up, with only
one more album due out
m the near future. I can’t
say enough about how
much 1 like this band,
and I am sad to see
them break up For
some really fun muse,
look for their album and
give it a listen, it really is
worth it.
STEVE WOODWARD S TOP FIVE OF 1994
r
1 Pan ter a — Far
Beyond Driven This
album is a near-pee
led lottow-up to
Pantera’s previous
release Vulgar Display of
Power
2
Nativity in Black: A
Tribute to Black
Sabbath; OkJ
Sabbath - New twist
Great fucking album'
3 Prong — Cleansing
Previous to this
retease, most ot
Prong’s material was
Thrash Metal A little
restraint turned into a tot
ol sales
Helmet — Betty
Each album jus!
keeps getting better
5Floater — Sink Vos,
even a Eugene band
can put out a decent
album.
TRISTA NOEL STOP FIVE OF 1994
1 Everything But the
Girl — Ambtant
Heart I listen to this
CD aH the time This
duo is made up of a
woman, who performs
the vocals, and a man,
who provides the music
and some vocals. Their
music is kind ot jazzy. I
wouldn’t call it jazz, but it
certainty does groove
The songs are full of
emotion, and the lyrics
tell the stories we can all
relate to.
2David Byrne — The
Forest The Forest
actually came out in
1991 But I bought the
CD and saw a perfor
mance ot rt in 1994,
which makes it count as
■94 retease to me
Influenced by the music
of South America.
Byrne's composition
focuses on instrumenta
tion It took a full orches
tra and eight vocalists to
recreate It Nve
It's incredible
3 Van Morrison — A
Night m San
Franasco Van
Morrison is my favorite
singer, but he rarefy
tours or performs live,
whch makes this CD
even more special. It's a
double disc of a live per
formance in San
Franasco Morrison per
forms the old favorites
("Gtona. in the Garden")
with a new twist, along
with songs from his lat
est CD. Too Long In
Exile, and covers of
other songs
Velocity Girl —
Simpabco!: I read a
review of this CO that
called it "pore pop"
Whatever it is. I like it.
Velocity Girl is a five
member band, with a
female lead singer Her
voice is dear and strong,
and it absolutely nngs on
Stmpabco.
5Schindler's List
soundtrack: John
Williams always cre
ates amazing sound
tracks. think of Indiana
Jones or Star Wars. And
Schindler's List is no
exception. The mus*c is
simple and beautiful, and
it captures the essence
of the film. It also has a
lot of string music in it,
which I love. The violin
solos are performed by
violin virtuoso Itzhak
Perlman
