DRIVING
Continued from Page l

Kelley said drivers should
keep their speed at about 20
mph when roads are Icy and
about 35 mph in other adverse
conditions. In addition, drivers
need to keep their distance
from cars in front of them
t-nove one-car length for even
10 mph. he said.
Paul Forrigno, a state high
way maintenance assistant
who works near Willamette
Pass, said most traffic acci
dents this year have been,
caused by people driving too
fast in adverse weather condi
tions. A state highway vehicle
was hit by a motorist who was
traveling about 50 mph on
black ice, he said.
"You just can't drive like
that on him k ice." Ferrigno
said.
Forrigno said another com
mon cause of accidents is dri
vers not using required
traction devices When roads
are l«»(l, motorists an- required
by law to use chains or trac
tion devices like studded tires.
Too mans people Ignore the
requirements until it's too late
“The time to put chains on
is when the sign says so and in
the areas provided for it." he
said.
Kelley and Kerrigno advise
drivers to brake lightly in win
ter conditions Slamming the
hrakex cause* the car to skid
Another helpful tip, Ferngno
said, is to watch for shaded
areas, which are usually the
iciest
Ferngno said the highway
department sands icy and
snowy roads as often as possi
ble Hut much of tbit sand gets
pushed to the side by cars Me
suggests that drivers use the
shoulder or middle of the road
where the sand collects
"Don't he afraid to stow
down and drive on the shoul
der The sand is there." he
said.
The weather this year has
been unpredictable so Kerrtg
no said drivers should always
prepare for the worst
"The weather has not been
real cooperative," ho said
Motorists should always
bring an emergency survival
kit. Kelley said Blankets,
water, food, dry clothing and
an extra coat are good items to
bring along during road trips
in bad weather.
Also, t he* k with the Oregon
State Police for current road
conditions before traveling.
'Hie road condition number for
Oregon is 975-7277.
