It was a game that Oregon basketball fans
will remember for some time to come — Ore
gon 80. UCLA 79.
Kver since Jerry Green arrived at Oregon
about two years earlier, a renewed sense of
hope for the Oregon basketball program had
lawn there, but had failed to actually physi
<4tlly manifest itself in the form of a winning
season or even a big win.
All that changed on that fateful Saturday
afternoon as Oregon came up with one of its
biggest wins in recent history.
The Ducks entered the UCLA game, their
last of the season, with a 9-17 record. Con
sidering the expectations placed on the
shoulders of the Dm ks in Green's second
season at the helm of the green and yellow,
nine wins was a bit of a disappointment.
What could have been a wasted season
suddenly took on a different glow as the
Ducks won four of their last eight games
including the stunning one-point victory
over the 15th-ranked Bruins from UCLA
UCLA entered its game with the Ducks
looking for a tunoup heading into the NCAA
Tournament With nothing left to play for
other than pride and a springboard going
into the next season. Jerry Green's Duck
squad made it their title game
"This feels like a national championship,"
Oregon guard Orlando Williams said follow
ing the game. Williams scored a team-high 23
points in the game that saw the Ducks chalk

saw it on television, but it never happened
to me."
Undoubtedly, the win sot the tone for Ore
gon as it enters its Pac-10 schedule after
completing the non-conference portion of
the schedule at 8-1, the best pre-conference

Oregon mark in 1H years
Green is confident that the Oregon fans
will remember last year's season ending vic
tory and hopes for the momentum to spill
over into this year's version of David vs
Goliath.

Much like last year's matchup with the
drums. the Ducks will have their work cut
out for them in 1905 as UCLA enters the
game ranked No. 2 in the nation and a
favorite to win the Pac-10. Oregon is no
slouch either hist year's win over UCLA has
turned some conference heads. And with
everybody returning from the team that
spoiled UCLA's fun, this year's Mac Court
matchup should be an interesting Pac-10
opener to say the least.
