same issue of the Emerald.
Oregon coach Len Casanova, however.
disagn*ed Quoting an Emerald editorial,
whu h compared the team to the popular
bedtime story about the little engine that
could. Casanova showed confidenc e in
his young team.
"1 know we c an." Casanova said, bor
rowing the famous words of the locomo
tive, in the Nov iifi. 1957 edition of the
Emerald.
However, the first drive of the game
looked to be the end for Oregon, as the
Buckeye's Die k I.eBeau ignited the
offense by running a Jack Morris kick
back to the 21-yard line Just a few plays
later. Ohio State's quarterbac k Frank
hremhlas hit Jim Houston with a .’i 7-yard
pass, and moments after that the Buck
eyes went up 7-0.
An interception of Oregon quarterbac k
Jm k Crabtree had several sportswriters
starting their stories about the Buckeye's
pommeling of the Dm ks
But in the second quarter, the Dm ks
drove HI) yards in ten plays, with half
back Jim Shanley's short run evening the
score up at 7-7.
The game was all Oregon until half
time. and i ertain sportswriters bcg.ut to
slump down in their cushy press box
seats as the Oregon fan club got louder
and bigger with each play.
The three-touchdown-underdog Dm ks
had taken the momentum from the But k
eyes and looked to bo in the proc ess of
one of the Rose Bowl's biggest upsets
ever
The third quarter was hard fought by
both teams, hut Oregon still had the
momentum. On every Ohio State drive,
the Dm ks stopped them short of becom

Then in the fourth quarter, it looked .is
if the Ducks had taken the lead on ,i ja< k
Morris field goal, tint the officials said it
was wide The But kayos strength then
took over, as their game-winning-drive
resulted in a Don Sutherlin field goal,
making the score 10-7
Oregon went into the game 21-point
underdogs, hut came out of it having
dominated the nation's top team
i rabtroe, who was tool 17 in passing
for 1 15 yards, earned the game's most
outstanding player award, and the Ducks
strong statistii s made it hard to believe
that the team had lost Oregon had 21
first downs and 151 total yards compared
to the Buckeyes' 19 first downs and 104
total yards
Oregon forced Ohio State to pun! twii e
but never had to punt themaelvea, and
lost the ball on downs only once while
the buckeyes did three times
The shocking Oregon performam e sent
the But keve players home with a disap
pointing win and put sportswriters and
their i ritii isms to shame
Casanova and the Ducks, however,
went home without a Rose Bowl victory,
but somewhat i»itter than the top ranked
team in the nation
