It's not often that it happens, hut one
series of plays between the Oregon Ducks
and the Oregon State Beavers in Saturday's
Civil War summed up both team's seasons.
Over three and a half quarters of nose
to-nose football set up yet another improb
able Duck victory in this 1994 season.
With 4:42 left on the clock in the fourth
quarter and the Beavers leading Oregon 13
10. the Ducks began their Civil War-path
to the Rose Bowl
A bruised and battered Danny O'Neil
stepped in at quarterback on hts own 29
vard line and looked for his favorite target,
flanker Cristin McLemore Mi Umumt. who
had missed most of the third and fourth
quarter due to a wrist injury, had returned
with a heavily bandaged left wrist and a
determined step in his gimpv stride
On first down,O'Neil dropped bat k and
hit M< l.emore perfectly on a crossing pat
tern from the right slot to the left hash mark
for a 31-yard gain, putting the Ducks in On>

The 1994 Civil War game was so reminiscent of last year's
game it was almost eerie. Hyped-up and much celebrated,
the game featured numerous missed opportunities that could
have spelled doom for either team, and eventually dill for the
Oregon State Heavers Hut for the Oregon Ducks, the game
was an upbeat and turnud-around remake of last year s Ore
gon classic.
As was last year, the game-time temperature was below 40
degrees, and light rain sprinkled the crowd of 37.010. pro
viding, at times, for sloppy play, including a missed fumble
opportunity for the Ducks and a last drive stumble by Oregon
State quarterback Don Shanktln.
With memories of Tommy Thompson's Civil War punt
ing woes lingering in the minds of Duck fans going into the
game, the second quarter almost turned out to be a recur
ring nightmare Actually, it was a recurring nightmare, only
this time the Dui ks were able to wake up before it was too
late
The Ducks had a 7-0 lead when they had to punt the hall
away from their own nine-yard line. But when it was all said
and done, the Ducks were looking at just a one point lend
after kicker Matt Belden's punt was blocked by Oregon
State's Larry Rumpus and turned into an Oregon State touch
down.
