Voices ensemble and its interna
tionally known conductor Paul

The Theatre of Voices will kick
off the six concerts that make up
this year 's Chamber Music
Senes at Beall Hall, which w
include such groups as the
Leonardo Trio, the Orion String
Quartet, the Alexander Quartet,
the New York Woodwind
Quintet, and the Cuarteto Latino
Americano
"Most people think of cham
ber music as a string quartet or
a piano trio but this isn't the
case,' said Janet Stewart, the
director ol the chamber music
series 'Basically chamber
music is music for a small force
of three to ten "
No where is the break from
the stereotype more easily seen
than with the Theatre of Voices
Created in 1989 and drawing
from a wide range of music, the
Theatre of Voices draws from
ethnomusicology and poetry, as
well as early and contemporary
muse The group is based at
the University of California at
Davis, where director Paul Hitlier
s an associate professor in the
Department of Music
Consisting of ten singers, the
T heatre of Voices has performed
and recorded such music as a
collection of Troubadour songs
and choral song-cycles by the
Estonian composer Veljo Tormis
Fifteen artists are In the Theatre of Voices. The group draws Its music from poetry , ethnomuslcology, and early and contemporary music
