Zookeepers use humor, metaphors in songs

Zookeepers say about Space
Mountain and Cinderella, in
'Mam St USA." from the band s
selt-titled, independent release
The Zookeepers are an
unsigned l A band with Patrick
Vernon on vocals, guitars, and
harmonica. Patti Ambs on lead
guitar, Inez Ftia on bass, and
Scott Conner on drums
Vernon, who writes all the
songs, often uses humorous
metaphors to relay meaningful
messages or perhaps iust to be
tunny
Maybe he's talking about the
deter location of our society, or
maybe he really thinks
'Thumper started the punk
scene *
Most people don't care any
way They want to know about
the sound as a whole Basically.
if you like Brush, Blues Travel,
Of God Street Wine, you'll protoa
bty enjoy The Zookeepers
They're all in the same genre .

music is
blues, talk,
acoustic
rock all
swirled
together
Vernon s voce is a soothing
cross between James Taykx
and Neil Young The latter's
sound is especially evident in
•The Cow Song.* a mellow
cow's muSings on his position in
lite *1 am |ust an existential cow/
wondering where and when and
how/ all my life will tali together *
The playing isn't stunning, but
it's certainly not bad either
When Vernon goes oH on the
harmonica, in an upbea! song
like 'Flying Around,' you have to
get up and dance
One ot the coolest aspects of
this CD is that there are not one
but three hidden tracks, includ
ing a live one. 'Pods Of
Introspection * These three
songs are more uplifting than
the rest of the album Track 12
was discovered the way most
hidden tracks are waiting for
the next CD to come on. and
looking up to see the counter
going backwards Secret songs
are always a treat
All in all, it's a fun album with
catchy, 'it's stuck in my head
again' songs, stylish musicians
and excellent sound quality
(considering it was recorded in
someone s garage)
Check them out live at John
Henry's. Oct 25. at 11 00 p m

Cranberries have another hit with ‘No Need to Argue'
Trie nice thing abou! eating
cranberries is that are bit
ter but also have a sweet
taste
That's how The
Cranberries latest release, No
Need To Argue sounds T he
muse s sweet, but the words
can be bitter or at toast melan
choly
No Need To Argue s similar
to £\eryone Else Is Doing It, So
Why Can ! IVo Dolores
O Riordan, the load singer,
achieves the same effect by
using her wispy, melodic voice
"I Can t Be With You* is the song
that sounds most like it came oft
the first album
Most of the other songs are
more pensive Twenty One* is
about the feelings O'Riordan
No Need To
Argue
Tfcr ( ni«hr'n«i
had as she
celebrated
her twenty
first birthday
in 1992
"The lode
Melts" is a
touching
song about
a child's
death "l
*■*■*■** bf>ouiu HOI
have read
the paper today/Causo a child,
child tie was taken away ' But it
isn't just about lamenting a
death, it s about being angry,
too 'How could you hurt a
chiid/Now does this make you
satistied/l don't know what's
happening to people today "
Most of the songs on No Need
To Argue are slow This speed
enhances the songs The feeling
on the title track is so believable
because of its slower presenta
tion The same is true for
"Empty" and ‘Everything Said I
Said “
My favorite song on the CD is
"Zombie ' This is another song
about killing and dying In the
liner notes after the song lyrics,
there is a note that reads
" Zombie’ was written on The
Cranberries’ English tour 1993
Man’s inhumanity to man and
worse still, to a child " Quite a
tew of the songs have notes
after them, which makes the
album seem more personal
