Finding great Chicago-style
pizza m this area can be difficult
But short of finding a way to Chi
town from here. Stepma's Famous
Chicago Style Pizza in Springfield
may be one way to satisfy even
the pickiest pizza lover's craving
for a good pie
Stepma's recently opened a
new dmrng area that is entirely
smoke-free Pizza aficionados
now have the opportunity to sit
down and enjoy a homemade
deep dish or thin crust pizza
Before business was primarily
take-out
Stepma's strives to use fresh
dough, the restaurant makes its
own sauce and IS famous for its
handmade sausage Besides
serving pizza. Stepma's also
serves gyros and Greek deli
catessen-style sandwiches
On Saturday night, the wait
staff could have used another
week of training before getting
slammed by jubilant Duck tans
following the wm over Cal
The atmosphere isn't Seattle,
which is what the slick glass table
tops and neon aquamarine
booths seem to want to acheive
But many full-service restau
rants in the Eugene,'Springfield
area forget about having fun and
don't require employees to dress
a certain way That can contribute
to a restaurant's setting Stepma's
has a dress code that definitely
sets a playful tone to the restau
rant
The waitstatf wore black and
white, white tops covered by

black vests over leans and ties
printed with faces of classic film
stars like Charlie Chaplin
After taking in the surroundings
and placing an order of a medium
deep dish sausage and green
pepper pizza, the next best thing
was the appetizers Garlic cheese
bread and mild pickled peppers
with green olives are complimen
tary They're a great tease to the
main dish
Our pizza arrived and was cut
into strips, not the usual triangles
of a round pizza The toppings
were covered by plenty of cheese
and well- cooked The peppers
were soft and fiavorful Each table
has a pepper shaker with a won
derful mixture of peppercorns to
grind on the crust When the
pizza is still hot. the freshly
ground pepper tastes great on
the crust
Stepina's Chicago Style Pizza
isn't for someone who still thinks
Little Caesar's is good pizza The
service needed some fine tuning,
but the food made up for the mis
takes made by the wait staff The
front of the store and where you
pay the bill is still reminiscent of
the old Stepma's
Prices range from about $20 for
a couple, a family can spend less
than $30 and be satisfied
