Local plant man presents multi-slide show

Local plants man Harold Greer, whose
many accomplishments have made him an
international authority on the plant king
Horn, is hosting a multi-slide presentation
Friday at 7 p in entitled “Plants and Colors
for All Seasons "
For S t visitors to Agate Hall (on Agate
Street ai ross from Hayward Field) can view
more than 400 slides exhibiting the ability to
extend a garden's c olor and beauty through
out the year

Besides the three projectors displaying
beauty, color and stru< lure of plants, then'
will also be some plant material available
to view
“Plants and Colors of All Seasons" is the
latest in the Hendricks Park Horticulture
Ledum Series sponsored hy Hendricks Park,
the Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group
and Gossler Farms Nursery.
Two or three times a year for the last sis
years, the public has Usui presented with an
international guest speaker on Horticulture,
Michael Robert. Hendricks Park Head Gar
dener said
"This is the first time we've had a local
speaker Greer has an international fame,"
Roirert said
Robert said he hopes the estimated 1 TO
people at the lecture will leave with more
general knowledge of plants.
Greer s photographs and plant knowledge
will document his lecture’s focus of using
plants for all year
Originally a student of landscape archi
tecture at the University. Greer soon realized
he was more interesttsl in the plants than the
designs.
“I knew it was wrong when they were
aiming me toward sitting in an office." Greer
said “One professor told me. 'You won't
need to know one plant from another
Greer. who owns Greer Gardens with his
wife Nancy Greer, has Ihhui collecting, buy
ing, caring for and mail-ordering plants
since 1972
With his father's early retirement hobby
being gardening. Greer grew up around
plants and has always been interested in
Horticulture.
However, Greer is surprised at where he
ended up, especially when it comes to his
mail-order business Greer's most recent cat
alog lists 3,000 plants including 700 types of
rhododendrons.
VVhile Greer deals with all plant types,
rhododendrons an- considered his specialty.
He has written two editions of Rhododen
dron Hybrids and is currently working on a
third edition of Gnrttr's Guidebook to Avail
able Rhododendrons
Greer received a Gold Medal from the
American Rhododendron Society in 1989.

The school was able to suc

includes additional computer
donations through spring term

tame and the possibility of long
term support from Apple
The partnership is part of the
law st hoot's plans to update its
25-year-old building and add
35.000 square feet to the school.
O'Kelley anticipates a budget
of $? million to $H million to
renovate the school. The budget
will come from private dona
tions to The Oregon Campaign,
the University's largest private
fund-raising effort
"There's not really a law
school in the country that had
focused on Macintosh equip
ment " In* said "A lot of the oth

focused on IBM computers."
O'Kelley said tin? law school
targeted Apple because of its
sophisticated graphics applica
tions, which often are useful in
the presentation of evidence,
and also In-cause the computers
are compatible with IBMs

Fifteen PowerMac s are on line
for student use in the computer

faculty use

an 85-seat classroom with por

take notes, outline research and
gain access to word processing
programs from the classroom
with their personal laptop com
puters,

with the building is to get it
totally state-of-the-art, not pist

ing, or the transmission of cours

O'Keiley said three courses —
Business Planning. Real Kstato
Planning and Securities Regula
tion — will be taught through
distance education in spring
1995 at Portland State Universi
ty. O'Kelley said this is another
example of extending the
boundaries of the law school.
Distance education caters
specifically to University stu
dents who ore in Portland for
internships With distance edu
cation. they can continue to earn
University credit. Portland State
students and members of the
community also will he able to
register for the classes
