Since coming to Eugene in
1972 to compete in an Olympic
trial, Heinonen has built roots in
Oregon Ho met his future wife
Janet at the meet, with whom he
wrote the hook All About Hood
Haring in 1979. They have
since had two children. Erik and
i.iisa. both of whom have gotten
an early start In running They
will compete in the Kid's Kilo
meter rm e at the Drenth meet on
Sunday.

In his time at Oregon.
Heinonen has (cached the likes
of Lsanne Warren, who t<x»k two
national titles her sophomore
year, and Cathy Mayes, who
holds the school record in the
3.000, 5.000 and 10.000-metar
races to this day In addition, he
coached three-time national
champion Annette Peters, with
whom ho still works.
“There are so many good
things aIkhiI Eugene for runners;
it's just made it a lot of fun,"
Heinonen said “I don't stay
here because of the salaries I
stay here because of the envi
ronment and the conditions
This is the job that a lot of peo
ple nationwide would want if
they i mild pick one."
Along with coaching the
Duds. Hcinonen was the junior
coach for the 1990 World Cross
Country Championships and
was head coach for the West
team in the National Sports Fes
tival in l‘»n In 1981 and 1991,
Heinoncn was a meet director
for the NCAA Championship* at
Hayward Field
Even with an impressive
resume. Heinonen has no inten
tions of taking his coaching rise
where
"I certainly would like to stay
at Oregon I think I can keep
doing the job," he said. "In spite
of three NCAA titles and all
those NCAA individual champi
ons. I've never had a single job
offer from another University, so
either that means nobody knows
that I'm the coach, or they fig
ured out that I don't know what
I'm talking about or they realize
that 1 would never leave here "
