    Cal’s Edwards squeaks

BERKELEY. Clalif (AB) — For Tyrone Edwards, one scoring
nin led to another
Both of Edwards's touchdowns came in the fourth quarter as
California rallied past Arizona State 25-21
flown 21-11. Cal (1-2. 1-0 Pac -10) got within striking dis
tance on Edwards's l vard touchdown run and went ahead
on his 8-yard sweep, gaining the victory in its conference
opener.
"After that first touchdown, you could just tell we could run
the ball." Edwards said
James Stallworth set up Cal's winning drive with his inter
ception of a Jake Plummer pass, returning it 2 yards to the Cal
40-yard line.
Dave Barr took over from there, leading the Golden Bears
60 yards in seven plays His 30-yard completion to Sean
Bullard advanced the hall to the 18
"This win means everything." added Barr "I c an't imagine
what another week would have been like if we would have
lost."
Arizona State (1-3. 1-1 Pac -10) got the ball bac k with two
minutes remaining but its last-ditch drive ended in Brandon
Whiting's fourth-down sack of Plummer.
"We guaranteed (the Cal offense) if they m ored after the
interception we'd stop them Everyone lived up to their word."
Stallworth said.
The Sun Devils quarterbac k finished 14-of-24 for 224 vards
with a pair of touchdowns to Keith Poole He had one inter
ception. Chris Hopkins led all rushers with 1 18 yards on 25
carries.
"When you have two evenly matched teams, you have a
chance to win it. It’s a game we could have won, certainly,"
Snyder said
Shawn Swayda stripped the ball from Reynard Rutherford at
the end of a run and free safety Eddie Cade re< overed the fum
ble at the Sun Devils' 45.
Plummer's third-down pass to Nelson gained 14 yards to the
Cal 28. Two runs by Hopkins netted 17 yards before Plummer
hooked up with Poole for the score and a 10-point margin with
10:36 remaining in the third quarter.
Hopkins broke loose on the first play of the second quarter
for a 35-yard scoring run.
