Fishy
When Kevin Mombuc kle goes
fixhm’, watch out. if your namn
is Martin Fisher, Emerald
columnist. Fisher verbally
attai ked Councilor Mombuc kle
in n March it column Hombuck
le responded May 25 with a log
n.al net: Hombuckle argued that
never once did Fisher mention a
position or vote taken by Horn
hut kle Ward voters apparently
agreed with Mornbuc kle. refus
ing to waste taxpayer money on
a spiteful recall
What's hilarious is that Fisher
is the very same columnist who
recently, passionately defended
Sen. Hob Fat kwood from being
kicked out of the U S Senate!
Pat kwood votes to cut down
old-growth forests and hand the
cash to the rich. Kevin Horn
buckle, on the other hand,
points out impolite facts, sui h
us a class war going on against
the poor So who does Fisher
Embrace? Pack wood
Fisher i ould get a high-paying
job writing for someone like Sen
Pack wood Voters often complain
about fake, lying politicians who
obey monied interests and never
rock the boat. Hornhnc kle. we
can all agree, is willing to make
waves.
If you want to roi k the sys
tem. attend Hornbuckle's next
fish-fry. If you want boredom,
wipe your mind with a column
of Fisher's fish-wrap.
The wav the Emerald is going
makes me wonder: Is the Uni
versity increasingly the home of
upper-crust oriented people
more interested in personal
greed, than the people's need!

Cop-out
III Peter UeFazio's May L'4
commentary, the Congressman
emphasize* the need for "more
cops on the Iwat " His simplistic
call for more cops is a simplistic
cop-out
It simply isn't true, as OeFazio
states, that "more police officers
equals less crime," America
already has more law enforce
ment personnel per capita than
almost any other industrialized
nation At the same time, we
have rates of violent crone and
incart eration among the worst
m the world One of the prime
reasons we have too much crime
is that we have criminalized too
much innocent activity
DeFazio states, " There simph
is not enough prison space
today to keep violent t riminals
in jail." This is not precisely
true All absurd peri entage of
the country's prisoners are
incarcerated for non-violent
offenses primarily drug-rolat
ed Our society can no longer
afford to wage a morally bank
rupt "war on drugs," which
drains societal resources, esac
erbates street violent e. and
erodes our constitutional rights
Peter, until VOU and our other
political representatives come
( lean and "cop" to these bash
law enforcement fails, your
"revolutionary" crime bills will
amount to nothing more than
reactionary posturing We
deserve better

Who’s rude?
I think it is very inconsiderate
of those of y ou who choose to
