Johnson wins
mile, misses
qualifying time

Gordon Johnson beat the field in the Twilight Mile
on Saturday. Me didn't boat the clock
The Oregon senior won the marquee men's event of
the Oregon Twilight Meet at Hayward Field, but In fell
24 seconds short of cracking the four-minute mark in
the mile.
Johnson outran former Twilight Mile winners (includ
ing Adidas' Greg VVhitelev and Oregon International's
Shannon Femora), n former NCAA champion (Nike s
Mark Davis) and a host of teammates
Johnson finished in four minutes, 2.1 seconds He
said he was surprised that the competitive field didn't
produce a sub-four-minuto time
"I could tell we weren't running super fast When
you're running really fast you can tell, and tonight
just felt like we were a little off that really fast tem
po," Johnson said.
Fntrants in the mile took turns breaking to the front
of the pai k and trying to take control of the race. Fui h
time a runner made his move, others were close behind
Johnson took the lead away from Whiteley on the final
lap and didn't falter down the final straightaway
Johnson's time was one second off an NCAA auto
