The most significant change made to the
document concerns the number of at-large
student members elected to the KMI: Board.
In the future, there will bo four, instead of
the existing five, student members elected
at-large from the student tx»dy for two-year
terms With the change, two students,
instead of three, will lx> elet teii in odd-num

members appointed by the Incidental Fee

Committee will restructure Women’s Center

Women's ( enter will t>e in charge of hiring a new
dinx tor and administrative assistant for the center.
The committee is composed of the current
ASIJO vice president, administrators from the
Dean of Students office, representatives from stu
dent unions and other faculty and students The
committee will hold a nations ide search for a pro
fessional, full-time director
In the past, the ( enter received complaints that
it didn't serve the needs of all women.
' We want someone who's professional and able
to relate to the various problems that will oi cur
in the center," said Krika Amishury. a member of
the restructuring committer*
The new director would aid the committee in
i housing an administrative assistant and hiring a
staff in the fall The hope is that the new director
and staff will change the atmosphere of the center
"The ideal Women's Center will lie one that pro
vides services and resources.” said Armsbury "It
will get past a victim's (.enter and move to a place
of empowerment This is a place whore women
( an feel strong, not lei victims of the situation I
want women to feel that they can still receive sup
port."
The center will provide referrals to support ser
vices throughout Eugene It will be a place for
women that will have access to equipment and
resources, such as a library and information Hies.
"Lost spring, the needs of all women weren't
being filled, especially those of women of color,
nontraditional women, women with children and
Straight white women." said ASUO President Eric
Bowen.
For restructuring, a neutral third party was
brought in. headed by Debra Landforce of the Dean
of Students office This restructuring committee
assessed the initial problems in the center. They
decided that the problems in the center were deep
er than originally suspected. It would take longer
than expected to correct the problems.
"I took short-term steps in order to correct the
long-term problem. I fired the director and hired
a new one. Michelle Parks." Bowen said. "But her
< ontruct expires on June 30.”
He said his role throughout the restructuring has
been one of support He provided administrative
support and guidance and made sure deadlines
wore met.
"1 advise that the new restructuring committee
not limit themselves," Bowen said, "if there were
no constraints on what services they could pro
vide. what services would they support?”
There has been little to no opposition to the
restructuring of the Women’s Center.
"The reports that I received from women have
all l**en positive," Bowen said. "I believe that
most women want a center that addresses their
needs. 1 hope this becomes a place for education
and empowerment, a place to develop leadership
skills, and a plane where they will support each
other."
