Track seeks qualifiers

Thu Oregon women's and
men's track teams will go after
Qualifying marks Saturday when
they host the Oregon Invitation
al at Hayward Field.
Ihe women s team looks to
improve after a recent bad streak
that saw them lose by more than
40 points at Washington two
weeks ago and then not perform
as well as expected at the Texas
Relays last weekend.
"Texas was a good experience
for a lot of our athletes, although
it didn't all work out the wav we
had hoped,” Oregon head coach
Tom Heinonen said. "We're still
looking for some good marks and
taking some steps up that we're
going to need in our scoring meet
in two weeks."
That meet — The Pepsi Invita
tional, where Oregon will com
pete against Washington, Wash
ington State and UCLA — will
tell a lot about just how far the
Ducks have progressed since the
devastating loss to the Huskies.
Among the competitors for the
Ducks this weekend will be Kel
ly Blair, competing in her first
heptathlon of the season Blair
won the NCAA championship
last season, and has already
eclipsed Pacific-10 Conference
qualifying marks for the high
jump and long jump. The hep
tathlon began Thursday and con
cludes Friday.
Freshman Milena Glusac has
qualified for the Pat -10s in the
1.500 and 3,000 and will get a
chance to compute against two of
the ties! distance runners in Ore
gon history when she runs
against Kryn Forties and Liz Wil
son.
Also expected to compete Sat
urday is Maria Mutola, the
world's top-ranked 800-meter
runner. She is expected to run the
1.500 on Saturday.
Oregon redshirts Camara Jones
and LaReina Woods may also
compete along with javelin
throwers Paula Berry and Kim
Hyatt.

decathlon champion Dan O'Brien
and Patrick Duffy, who was
ranked among the top 20 110
meter hurdlers in the nation last
year.
The decathlon begins Thurs
day' and concludes Friday with
Ray Livingston. Paul Pappas and
Jeromy Williams competing for
Oregon.
The developmental portion
of the Oregon Invitational
begins at 9:30 a m. Saturday.
