Connin'* death was much. much more than that Coha in’s death marked the end of one of the great est songwriters of the past two decades. (»o ahead, laugh if you want, but try to name someone else that has done a better job of com inunic nting musically to a mass audience. Name I another band that totally blew the roof off a city's music scene the way Nirvana broke Seattle. Name another group that was able to spin the record Indus try 1H() degrees the way Nirvana did with the release of tool's Nevermind All the success was directly attributed to Cobain who wrote basically all the mush and lyrics on Nir vana's four albums. One phrase that is often assoc iated with Cobain is voice of a generation " On the surface that asso i iation is pretty weak After all. as one student puts it. "How c an he lie a voice of my generation? I can't even understand what he's saving " That's true Much is said of Cohain's great lyric writing abilities. In actuality. Cohain's musical pow er doesn’t lie in his ability to write great lyrics Kven Cobain used to admit that people put way too muc h meaning into his lyric s. and that often they were l just a hunc h of garlwige to go over the music In lac t. the lyric s of 1 OHM's h were almost * entirely written the night before the songs were t recorded However, if them is anything in Nirvana's music that speaks for our generation, it is the music: itself, ns a whole It is music loaded with pounding drums and si reec fling guitars That is where the music runs parallels with the so called "Generation X" popu lation Hie music is where the angst and anger come through, not the lyrics At the same time. Cofxiin was always able to take those desperately powerful songs and add a touc h of melody to them, make things a little more enjoy able Music is one of the first things jieople use to bring back a moment in time, whether it be an era. a do nrie a generation or a year it is always one of the defining symbols of a time Make no mistake about it, uhi ther you like Nir vana or not. when you look track at your college days. "Smells hike Teen Spirit" is going to l>e one 01. if not the only, song you re:Imnylrei. (inbain has Ix-en compared to every one from John Lennon to Sid Vicious, and that's the beauty of what Gobciin repntsonted Gomparisons to Ixith those rex k n ons are not unwarranted Gobain definitely had the ability to write musu . allhough maybe nol Ivruthat were on a par with lennon. who many is of the greatest songwriter ever Cobain obviously led a lifestyle that wasn't far removed from Vic ious' drug-filled punk/rebel days that led to his death from a drug overdose The thing that made Cobain sjm* ml was the fo< t he wasn't ns likable and endearing as Lennon was to such a huge audience But at the same time. Cobain had intelligence and smarts about him that put him millions of miles ahead of the dopes Vicious, musically speaking. And he and his band were suc c essful, and wildly so. In the end. it was that sun ess that apparently drove Cobain to stu king a 12-gage shotgun in his mouth and pulling the trigger The saddest part of the whole story is not the fact he killed himself, hut why he killed himself The pressures of leading one of the hottest bands on the planet had pushed Cobain to the point where his music, was his identity. In his suicide letter he stated he had lost his pas sion to play music; Hint seems to say that his whole being was playing music, and if he didn't want to play music: anymore, he was as good as dead any way. Drugs definitely played a role in Cobain's death — whether they were in his system at the time of his death is still being investigated — but how big of role is still up for debate. Cobain said he took drugs — heroine and other prescription drugs — to combat a severe stomach ailment that no doctor had been able to diagnose. He bad apparently liegun to use heroine again upon returning home after coming out of a coma last month in Rome — that, too. was an apparent sui cide attempt. It's hard to imagine why. or how, a guy like Cobain. who seemed to lie having a good time since the release: of last fall's In Utero and subsequent tour, could leave his wife and. most disparaging, his daughter. Frances Bean. If there is one aspect of this whole suicide that gives reason for fans to he angry with Cobain, it is the fact he bailed out on his daughter. Courtney Love will he fine in time, but Cobain's suicide will leave permanent scars on his daughter. How would you like to lie the daugh ter of Jim Morrison, or Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin? Probably not a real fun life Remember April H. lOO-F It will be a day that for ever lives as a sad day in rot k n' roll. Kurt Cohain will not he a rot k star who fades away in time. Like Morrison.
