penalty, gets probation

infractions in the basketball pro
gram, including the paying of n
potential player’s junior college

The infractions took place
under former coach Jerry Loyd,
who resigned nt the end of the
1993-9-t season after the team
went 2-2f> Keller also resigned
after the investigation began.
The university was repri
manded and told to have its cur
rent athletic policies and prac -
tii t-s recertified by the NCAA.
"Basically they gave us one
year to implement seminars and
training for all our coaches as
well ns other personnel on
recruiting, rules, regulations
financ ini regulations, a whole
range; of issues," Stovall said.
Loyd also was reprimanded.
The NCAA infractions com
mittee report released Tuesday
said the university cooperated
fully in the investigation and
waived appeals.
"We worked under the direc -
tion of both of those groups." Sto
vall said. "We notified them
immediately and said that we
didn't know if we had anything
serious."
Sprague set for Festival
Junior Mat Sprague qualified fur the U.S. Olympic Festival this
summer with a fourth-plai e finish at the University Nationals in
freestyle wrestling held in Fvanston, III Sunday.
The 180 5-pound Portland native was the only one of the eight
Oregon wrestlers at the tournament to advance to the Olvmpii Fes
tival In placing in the top four of his weight class.
Three others wrestlers. James Stephens. Jeremy Fnsrud and John
Taylor also placed Stephens, a sophomore from Everett. Wash., was
seventh at 125 5 pounds, one plai e ahead of teammate Fnsrud. who
finished eighth Taylor, a freshman from Olvmpin, Wash., also fin
ished eighth at 114,5 pounds
In other wrestling news, Oregon sophomore All-American Kevin
Roberts has been selei ted to compete for the United States team
being assembled by the National Wrestling Coaches Association this
summer
Roberts placed fourth at last month's NCAA Wrestling Champi
onships in the 1 IH pound classification Only All-American
wrestlers who are underclassmen are eligible for inclusion on this
touring squad.
The tour will be to Germany from June 12 to 21. Last year's squad
plac ed third in the tournament held in Italy, finishing behind Iran
and Russia.
Rolierts will compete in the 125.5-pound freestyle competition.
