Groups fight against sexual crimes
By Daniel West
OlV1*1 CW> l mtfitkl
The Unwanted Sexual Behav
ior Task Force is networking
with other groups on campus to
stop sexual assault and rapes
I he task fort e was established
in response from students and
parents who were i oncerned
about their safety or their child's
well-being.
Their goal is to build a solid
foundation so that students will
have a safe plat e They will he
able to get all the help necessary
through the various groups
involved such as. Creating a
Rape Free Environment.
Safertde and Greeks Against
RajM*
Sint e their < urrenl focus is to
get more students to report vex
ual assaults and rapes, the actu
al number of sexual crimes
remains vague. If the numbers
i outline- to l)t* unt lear. the l mi
v ersitv will In* unable to obtain a
clear indication of how severe
the problem of sexual assault is
on campus.
"It's realty hard to say where
the University is at in terms of
numbers, because many stu
dents don’t report any sexual
assaults." said Jbsoh Ashlev
assistant dean of students
The task fort e urges students
to report any sexual crimes with
the t University Off it « of Public
Safety and Kugene Police
Department. Students can also
fill out an unofficial report form
tfiat doesn't require the student
to state their name or identifica
tion.
I hose forms are located in
various buildings throughout
campus such as the KMU and
Prince hue ion Campbell Hall
Although these forms have been
available in the past, students
have still neglei ted to fill them
out
"I don't know that the num
bers have in* reased hei ause no
unofficial report forms have
been returned Students don't
want to fill out the forms Some
are embarrassed or ashamed of
the assault, said Sho Shlgeok.c
a staff member at the dean of
students
I'he lash force will continue to
educate and raise awareness of
this issue In the past, it has
printed brochures and pam
phlets regarding sexually
assaults and rapes and has even
produced a videotape at the Uni
versity geared toward interna
tional students and i ultunil mis
conceptions and stereotypes
Currently, the task force is
forming a committee to promote
the tank force to the student
body Also, it encourages stu
dents to attend informational
meetings the first and third
Wednesday of every month in
the EMll
Next month, the task force
will begin "Training of Train
ers" informational meetings.
These meetings will cover all
aspects and issues dealing with
sexual assault and rape In the
full, students will be trained on
how to educ ate other students
conc erning these issue
'll seems that students learn
more and take issues more seri
ous when they're taught by a
peer rather than an instructor or
someone who’s much older than
them." Shigeoka said.
The task fore e urges that all
students should at least lie
aware that sexual assault and
rape is a universal issue
"1 was brought up hy my
mother, and I have a sister 1
need to be aware 1 have female
friends w ho could open up to
me about sexual harassed. I
want men to know that it isn't
only a women's issue," Ashley
said.
