Two students were cited March 29.
one for using the other's driver's license
and the other for lending it out Acc circl
ing to police rec ords, the owner of the
lic ense, a 22-year-old. went to the DMV
to report her driver's license stolen, after
she had given it to her minor friend, n 19
y oar-old.
The c ase came to the pole e's attention
after the 19-year-old lost her wallet at the
University Hook store, containing both her
friend's driver's license and her own
identification c ard
A student reported her $200 hie yole
stolen from the 300 bloc k of East 17th
Avenue March 30
A student reported a $400 bicycle
stolen from the 1200 block of East 11th
Avenue March 11
A student reported a fourth-degree
assault on the 1000 block of Patterson
Street March 11 According to police
reports, the victim was leaving the Uni
versity Inn and was crossing the road,
when suddenly she heard a pop and felt
a pain in her leg The victim had been
shot by a H.B gun and re< eived a small
prop* tile wound

A 19-year-old male student was cited
for minor in possession, using an invalid
driver’s license and for hindering prose
cution April 1 According to police
reports, the suspect tried buying some
kegs with a false driver's license, which
was observed bv a police officer who was
at the same loc ation going through keg
slips The employer refused to sell the
suspec t any beer, believing the driver's
license was fake The offlc er then took the

tried to get away by running out of the
building The officer found the suspect's
friends waiting in a car outside, hut they
denied being hi* friends at this point
One of them, a 19-year-old student, was
later cited for hindering prosecution. The
main suspect was out of sight, but was
later found through investigation and

three counts of second-degree criminal
trespass at Lawrence Hall April 2

orderly conduct and harassment on the

According to police records, the suspec t
was visiting various shops where he was
screaming and yelling, lie also behaved
aggressiveh while panhandling students
who didn't give him money

"The basic (health care) bene
fit package is quite good," he
saia.
DeFazio said he favors ini hid
ing abortion services and mental
health care in the list of treat
ments that will be t overed.
"I am going to push for full
reproductive services because if
they are not included, there
won't be anyone left to provide
those services." DeFazio said "I
have a background in rehab
counseling. . 1 have a strong
affinity in that area. It should be
part of the package."
In response to an observation
from a member of the audience
that 27 percent of uninsured
Americans are between the ages
of 18 and 24. DeFazio said that a
single-payer health care plan
would help meet this need.
“We shouldn't have young
people out there without health
insurance." he said.
When a member of the audi
ence asked DeFazio about the
Montana Wilderness Bill,
DeFazio said that fie and two
other sponsors of the bill were
pushing it because "we think it's
the strongest bill we can get and
we want it passed while we
have a Democratic president."
The questioner asked DeFazio
to "justify” the bill because he
said that under the Montana
Wilderness Bill, nine times
more timber will fie cut than
saved.
DeFazio said this number was
wrong. When the questioner
tried to continue the debate,
DeFazio said. "One of my staff
— you can wait and ask one of
them your questions afterwards.
I don't want to go into great
detail right now."
When asked about the move
in recent years of financial aid
from offering more grants to
offering more loans to students,
DeFazio said that he is disturbed
by the trend
'I would like to saddle peo
ple with less debts, with fewer
loans over grants." he said
DeFazio also said he would
like to see an expansion of Pres
ident Clinton's plan to work off
school loans with community
service, and that he would like
to "convert them to ability to
pay with reasonable interest
rates keyed to a reasonable per
centage of income."
