With both th»> men and

this season. Oregon's trat k
teams open their dual meet sea
sons at Washington on Saturday
The Ort*gon men's team began
its season two weeks ago with a
quiet showing in the Oregon
Preview meet Other than m the
3,000 meters, where Rh k
Cantwell, Karl Keska and St ott
Nicholas took the top three
places, the Dm ks had few high
lights.
Oregon rebounded with a
strong showing at the Stanford
Track and Field Festival last
weekend I thought the team
really performed well down
there, almost across the hoard
for everyone We had a lot of
PKs (personal records) and lot of
good performances,” said Ore
gon head coach Hill Dellinger
Nicholas, a sophomore,
became the first athlete on the
Oregon men s team this season
to reach a provisional qualifying
mark for the NCAA champi
onships. Nicholas set a person
al record and reached the quali
fying standard with a time of t
minutes, 43.1*1 seconds in the
1.300 meters
Also at Stanford, freshman

Williams won the pole vault,
and Oregon won the distance
medley relay
Looking ahead to Saturday s
meet in Seattle, Dellinger said,
We're as ready as we're going
to he at this stage 1 think we still
are going to get better as the sea
son goes along.
"We're about where wo
should be Maybe the 400 guvs
could be a little further ahead,
hut 1 think that will come,” he
said
Dellinger named the sprint
and relay groups, the middle
distance and distance groups,
and the high jump and pole
vault as being among Oregon's
strong suits early in the season.

Oregon had a 15-meet win
ning streak against Washington
before losing in Seattle in 1000
Oregon, which finished fifth at
last year's Pai 10 meet, has won
its last three meetings with the
Huskies
For the Oregon women's track
team. Saturday's meet will i on
tinue its rebuilding process
Oregon comes into the meet
with a lot of questions looming
about |ust how good this team
will be The Ducks took fourth at
last year's NCAA meet but lost
three of their five scorers to
graduation A fourth. Camara
Jones, has opted to redshirt this
season
Only heptathlete Kelly Blair,
who won the NCAA chumpi
unship in the event, returns to
the team this season However.
Blair will compote sparingly, it
at all, Saturday because she is
nursing tendinitis in her left
knee
So. for Oregon head coni h
I out Heinonen. Saturday's meet
with the Huskies is a i ham e to
see what his options are for this
season.
"Our team is young and we're
not particularly ready right now
because of injuries," tie said
"This is not an important meet
in the long range, it's pist the
next meet and it’s the first si or
mg meet for us outdoors We re
looking at the javelin, triple
jump, 400 meters and the 800 .is
being among the more < ompeti
live events "
The Ducks could get big
points in the javelin with Keri
Fsterbrook. Tonia Koth and
Kelsy Stellick All three have
the possibility of winning the
event and making a step toward
replacing Ashley Selmnn, w ho
won the NCAA title last season
