Court should allow
officials to keep jobs
Voters who approved a sot of drastic changes to the
ASUO constitution in a special election earlier this month
may have gotten more than they bargained for. depend
ing on the outcome of a hearing scheduled for the ASUO
Constitution Court this Friday.
Student government representatives from the Student
Senate, the Incidental Foe Committee and the EMU Board
of Directors who were elected last year to two-year terms
may find those terms shortened to one year eat h. if the
Constitution Court does not agree to transfer those offi
cials into the new student government structure.
A tiny percentage of the University population turned
out to approve the new government, which replaced the
old system and its structures with a new overreaching
Student Senate and a troika of lower bodies, responsible
for the EMU. the athletic department and the various
ASt JO programs.
My revamping the structure tins way. the voters oner
lively eliminated a number of positions, and replai ed
those positions with new ones not precisely the same
The voters put several representatives out of a job by eliin
mating their positions.
The court should agree to make a der ision on the mat
ter. and that decision should be to make a plac e for those
hapless officials in the new government Most of the posi
tions have rough equivalents in the new system, so it
should be a simple matter to plug the old representatives
into the new positions. For instance, an Incidental Fee
C Committee member could be given a post in the new Stu
dent Senate's financial subcommittee.
There art) only a few individuals who have been affect
ed by the constitutional < hanges; those people who held
one-year terms would have left office anyway. and sev
eral of the two-year posts expired this year as well Only
those who were elected to two-year seats in the past year
have been impat ted by the government's radical make
over.
Because their numbers are small, there should be no
problem moving them to new positions, if then so desire
There are plenty of seats to go around
It's important that the wishes of the student body , as
expressed in hist spring's ASl’l) eiei lions, be faithfully
followed. The voters elected these representatives with
the understanding that they would serve two year terms
The voters have not indie ated that they want their rep
resentatives to lose their jobs, so the (^institution (lourt
should respect the voters' original wishes and allow
the officials to keep their positions.
Doing so will help create a sense of continuity, from
the old government to the new. That's the whole purpose
of having two-year positions in the first place: to make
sure that each successive year of government has some
"veterans" from the previous year.
It will take some time before the kinks of the new sys
tem are worked out. the experience of these individu
als will help make the process a little easier. Keeping
these representatives is not only the fairest option, but it
would also would help the new government get off on
the right foot.
