Oreqon women defeat ASU

What the Oregon women's basketball team
lacked in depth Saturday night, it made up for in
height.
The Duck reserves were unable to hold a 21
point second-half lead against Arizona State, but
the undersized Sun Devils could not contain Ore
gon's post players down the stretch as Oregon
rolled to a 75-59 win.
Oregon won its fourth consecutive game in the
Pacific*tO Conference, the second-longest confer
ence winning streak in school history. The Ducks
improved their record to 5-2 in league play and 11
5 overall. The win also moved Oregon into a tie for
second place in the Pac-1().
Arizona State. 0-7 and 2-12. was the weakest
opponent Oregon had faced in almost four weeks
Oregon scored the Iasi five points of the first half
and the first nine of the second half to take a 4(>-27
lead with Hi 29 remaining
Oregon would extend its lead lo 21 as head
coach Jody Runge went to her hem h Runge said
she wits not conceding the game, pist using an
opportunity to give her starters some rest
"We've got some had bruises and some soft tis
sue. so wo re trying to get them some rest,” Runge
said.
The Oregon reserves held their own in the first
half, especially freshman forward Betty Ann Boev
ing. who finished with seven points and three
rebounds in 14 minutes
The second half was a different story. Oregon
( enter Sandie Edwards scored from short range to
make the score 57 40 with 10:36 left, but then the
Ducks went scoreless for five minutes

scored 13 unanswered points. Bv the time Runge
returned her starters to the court, the game was too
close for the comfort of many of Oregon's fans
Runge said she "wasn't real pleased'' in the
bench's inability to hold the big lead but felt the
reserves deserved an opportunity to prove them
selves
"We had a lot of people off the bench who got
some quality minutes who haven't had those quid
ity minutes because we've been in a learning
process for so long." Runge said.
"When you have kids who haven ! had much
quality playing time, when they have the jitters
and their feet are kind of in the mud, you have to
give them time to warm up and stick with them."

other ways, pulling down nine rebounds, dishing
out four assists and blocking three shots

Oregon outrebounded Arizona State 41-33 and
held the Sun Devils to 3H percent shooting from
the field. The Ducks made only three of 14 throe
pointers. but shot 59 percent from inside the arc
Schutt scored 11 points, and guard Missy
Croshaw added nine points and a team-high seven
assists Guard Karen Healea had six steals for the
Ducks
"She (Runge) was telling us we weren't being
aggressive enough on defense and that we were in
deep crap if we didn't start doing something, so I
just went after it." Healea said
Oregon travels to the Flay Area for games against
Stanford on Thursday and California on Saturday
The Cardinal. 4-2 and 114 going into Sunday’s
contest against USC, was ranked among the top 25
nationally in last week’s coaches' poll.

The pace, which Kidd
established from the start,
was fast and the play physi
cal. But Cal's switch to a
zone defense forced the Bru
ins to go outside, where they
were l-for-19 from 3-polnt
range.
"It's hard to swallow.” said
forward Ed O'Bannon, whose
24 points led the Bruins. "We
wore used to winning. But I
think we're good enough and
confident enough to bounce
back."
USC women beat Stanford

81-73 Sunday.

en points during USC's 17-2
game-opening run. She now
has 2.104 points

three blocked shots and two
assists for the Trojans (15-1,
8-0 Pac-10).
"Lisa Leslie showed why
she is the best player out
there," USC coach Cheryl
Millor said. "She was
tremendous. I told her before
the name, ‘Just go out there
and have fun.' "
USC led 38-36 at halftime,
but trailed 57-51 with 11:28
remaining. Leslie hit a layup
to give the Trojans the lead
for good, 61-59. The basket
launched a 10-2 spurt capped
by another Leslie basket as
USC led 71-61 with four min
utes to play She converted
four free throws in the final
11 minutes to hold off the
Cardinal (11-5, 4-3).
