Basketball coaches
threaten to boycott
Washington State basketball
c oach Kelvin Sampson, a mem
leer of the Him k (.on< hes Asscm i
alion, said he hopes a boycott
can be avoided but pledged his
solidarity with the assoi iation's
position over a 14th scholarship
for men s basketball
Requests for reinstatement of
the 14th scholarship were n-|ei t
ed at the NCAA Convention in
San Antonio on Tuesday The
BCA contends African-Ameri
cans are less likelv to attend col
lege without aid and will be dis
proportionately hurt by the
cutback
"In all likelihood, there will
lie a boycott." said BCA exec li
the director Rudy Washington
after the NCAA action
"Close to 70 percent of Divi
sion I players are African-Amor
ican kids, so there's one group of
society that is being affix ted hv
this ruling more than any other."
said Sampson, who is a North
Carolina I.umber Indian
"M\ feeling is that there has to
he communications between
coaches and college presidents."
In* said. "There’s got to be some
way to iron this out
Most coaches believe spend
ing cuts are inevitable, but there
are better ways to trim budgets,
Sampson said
"Cut our travel budget
maybe wo ve got to go three to a
room, what’s wrong with that?
Cut our roc rutting budget. Just
don’t take .iwav a kid’s opportu

"There’s a possibility we ll
play, there's a possibility we
won't Something definitely will
happen — but I don’t have an
answer for you yet exactly what
it will be," Sampson said.
"The biggest thing the coaches
am looking for is there has to !»■
a sensitivity to these issues A
lot of people say this (one schol
arship) is no big deal This may
not be, but what about the last
one? What about the next one?
"There comes a point where
you have to take a stand. A
brush fire here or there isn't
going to do anything we've got
to hove solidarity on this."
Sampson said.
John Wade. Eastern Washing
ton University coach and also a
BCA member, said EWU’s bas
ketball program "doesn't have
enough money to be fully fund

the BCA.
"Opportunity taken away
from a group of people" is
wrong, even though reducing
schools to n scholarships
nationally would bring EWU
closer to parity in Division [,
