LETTERS Genocide I am writing to express mv outrage at the brutal repression earned out by the Mexh an gov eminent in Chiapas. I am also appalled bv the rat ist and insen sitive reporting of these events in the U S. media Articles such ns "Uprising focuses new attention on Indi ans" (Register-Guard, |nn 9) refer to Chiapas ns a “backward" state The author also asserts that the recent uprising was probably initiated by "out siders'' — doubting it could have been indigenous in origin because the "attacks were well planned and coordinated” and had a "mark of military sophis tication" — a sophistii ation of whit h he must believe indige nous people are incapable As a l.ntin American historian deeply concerned with indige nous rights. I could use this space to denounce the history of colonialism and the persistence of poverty and injustice in southern Mexico. 1 could dis cuss the strong heritage of resis tance among the Mayo through out history. Or, I could share my experience living in Chiapas in 1990 and tell you that rural protests and the subsequent killings of campesino and indigenous leaders are nothing "new” — they w'ere events reported in the local papers dai ly. But. academic language fails me now I find all I can say is mv heart aches. While the upris in# itself came as no surprise to me. the brutal repression that followed did The < laints that President Salmas "reacted judi ciously to the guerrilla attacks" is insane It is appalling that national governments i ontinue to condone and implement o nomic and military strategies whir h amount to genocide However, given our own nation’s experience in dealing with indigenous peoples, per haps it is not surprising there has heen no moral outrage over the recent events in Chiapas Theresa Lowrie Graduate student History In short Marv Tegel's complaint about the neon and plastu banners on the EMU was superb [ODE.
